First day of the year back in #London and I'm shattered. It was a good day, even without any after-work socialising, but... blimey.
(I don't think I can blame the commute really, it's day 1 of an intense week of interviewing folk for a role)

At the corporate event everyone is wearing a name tag with your title and the company you work for. Guests are circling each other trying to read the name tag and see if you're interesting enough to talk to. Almost no one is there to simply socialize. They are trying to sell you something, sway your opinion, or add your details to their records for future use. In the background the conference has a software app that allows attendees to track and target each other. The goal is to add as many people as possible to your network, or insert yourself into their contact list. It's rare to make a new friend.

When people say "it's socialism for the rich, but rugged capitalism for the poor" I always want to correct them. "Socialism for the rich" is not socialism at all. That's just capitalism. That's the definition of the capitalist state: a committee that manages the collective interest of the whole bourgeoisie.
Protests erupted nationwide as the U.S. attacks Venezuela and kidnaps President Maduro and his wife.
San Francisco was no exception.
As the recent days of rain let up for a grateful pause, activists of all ages from the Answer coalition, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Democratic Socialists of American, Revolutionary International Youth, Refuse Fascism, and just people with home made signs rallied at Powell and Market.
They then marched down Market Street to …

1) Convincing victory of united left in second round as António José Seguro elected president of Portugal with 67% of second round vote, a rout for far right Chega.
2) In the Bourbon monarchy next door, right PP wins regional election in Aragon but will depend on far right Vox doubled representation. Centre left PSOE diminishes, left Sumar hangs on to 1 seat while Podemos vanishes.
Broad left unity defeats the right in these PR systems.

If you follow me and identify as a Marxist-Leninist, it’s worth understanding that we stand on very different sides of the socialist tradition. It’s time to read and learn, my friend. Marxist-Leninists have a long history of opposing anarchists, especially anarcho-syndicalists.

idea: add #llm support to #syslog so when nothing interesting is happening then it generates some exciting log entries, and if something interesting is happening it hides in the noise. just to keep SoC people entertained.

It's Interesting today that the popularization of @…'s concept of "enshittification" is leading us to really think hard about how various methods of vendor lock-in enable corporations to abuse users. We see how first there's lock-in then quickly abuse follows, and recognize that the only way out of this trap is to build systems where users can leave at will.
But it's interesting that in this time of rising fascism no one is making the connection to fascism, as both increased lock in and enshittification of government. And no one is making the connection between the need to make systems optional to avoid enshittification, and libertarian socialist arguments against the systemic lock-in (and following abuse) of capitalism and the state.
