Lunch = 1 hr nap in the sofa with a podcast in the background. I won't remember the cast and have to re-listen to it, but I really like soft voices in the background when I take naps. Perhaps a stupid TV-show, I need other people as long as I don't have to meet them face to face

The new sofa and recliners arrived yesterday - yay!
The old suite was over 30 years old so I guess we were kind of due for an upgrade.
Ordered in June - delivered October.
Sadly, the last thing we'll ever buy from Cusack's as they're closing down in November. They're a Canberra institution.

My haul from Waterstones this morning. I went specifically looking for Body Work so was delighted to find it. I didn't mean to buy the two other books. I was initially drawn in by the lovely covers, then the 'buy one get one half price' stickers. I've enjoyed many Japanese novels in translation, starting with The Makioka Sisters by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki a few years ago.

Three books laid out on a sofa cushion. At the top Body Work by Ben Aaronovitch. Underneath two Japanese novels in translation: The Passengers on the Hankyu Line by Hiro Arikawa, tr by Allison Markin Powell, and More Days at the Torunka Café by Satoshi Yagisawa, tr by Eric Ozawa. That one has three cats and knitting on the front so I can't go wrong!

Special evening.
Bruce and Charley cats (brother and sister) groom each other before meals and are sometimes close to each other outdoors, but basically spend the rest of their time indoors in separate rooms or chasing and swiping each other.
As kittens, they curled up together, but that hasn't happened for a long time now.
Tonight, for the first time in at least 6 years, wife and I were on the sofa with both cats beside us. No hissing, lots of purring, and it was magic…

Content warning: Tod eines Tieres

Seine Ohrspitze war das letzte, was ich von unserem Kater Merlin heute sah, als wir die Erde auf ihn schütteten. Ich habe den Vormittag damit verbracht, ein Grab für ihn auszuheben. Heute Morgen begleiteten wir ihn durch seine letzten Zuckungen. Sein Herz schlug immer langsamer, nachdem er die Atmung schon eingestellt hatte. Meine Frau hat ein letztes Foto von ihm gemacht, aber ich will ihn nicht so in Erinnerung behalten. Es gibt viele schönere Fotos von ihm.

Foto vom letzten Jahr. Merlin hat Kopf und Pfote auf meinem gebrochenen Beim abgelegt und schläft. Er liebte das, aber in den letzten Monaten hat er das immer seltener gemacht, vielleicht auch weil ich weniger Zeit abends auf dem Sofa verbringe als die Jahre davor.

Sick day for me thanks to innards that haven't got the memo that I'm in my mid-50s now and we don't need to be bothering with all that nonsense any more. I wondered if HR would believe my reasons for a sick day at my age but I don't think anyone wants to enquire too closely into the details 😄 I've nearly finished the Barabara Pym, and nurse Sparky spent much of the morning parked on my hot, heavy and aching legs, so all in all a pleasant if uncomfortable day.
