The Webster–Ashburton Treaty was signed August 9, 1842, and resolved several border issues between the United States and the British North American colonies (the region that very soon would become the Dominion of Canada). The treaty would end disputes and controversies over the vague indefinite terms and text of the old peace agreement of the Treaty of Paris of 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War. Specifically, it defined borders between Maine and New Brunswick, territory surrounding Lake Superior, and reaffirmed the western border on the 49th parallel. More importantly, it began a period of peace and friendly diplomacy between the two countries... until Americans decided a moronic spray tanner, suspected abuser of women, convicted felon, golf cheat, and narcissistic conman should be their president.

It's a slow historical news day, except for Walter Gretzky's birthday, so time for another post on provincial governmental cities. Today, we present some history on Ottawa, which is not a provincial capital but somehow was lucky enough to be chosen as the capital of Canada. In the 1800s, Upper Canada moved their capital like a traveling circus, so in the 1850s a competition arose between Quebec City, Montreal, Kingston, Toronto, and some muddy lumber town that until recently was named Bytown. An unbiased expert on Canadian geography and regional governments was selected to choose the permanent capital of Upper Canada - Queen Victoria. There was no chance that a French speaking city was going to be chosen by the British monarch, and Kingston and Toronto were too close to those pesky Americans who liked to invade us every decade or so. So Ottawa, in the middle of nowhere, was the obvious choice.
