The dot over the i in 'ThinkPad' on the *palmrest* of my laptop has a light pipe but no LED. I wonder if there's any sane way to put a controllable LED under that: an unplumbed USB port I can connect a uC running a HID stack, a dangling GPIO, etc. Maybe something on the WWAN slot?
I got a Thinkpad x260 at a great price a few months ago, and the Arch Linux & i3wm combo makes it work great.
Their reputation for working well with GNU/Linux systems is well deserved.
If you are looking for alternatives for your computer equipment, the second-hand market offers this and other classic models at a very good price in almost every corner of the globe. And when the second wave of equipment arrives thanks to Windows 11, this is going to be amazing.
Soon, I’ll be throwing away all my desktop computers as well, though I’m keeping my Lenovo Thinkpad around. I hate computers, yet I use them.
To me, computers are just junk nobody asked for. They’re glowing traps that keep us hooked, scrolling and clicking away our time for endless feeds. No matter the OS or hardware, it’s all distraction from reality.
Yes, Linux can free us and all that, and even the hardware can be part of that freedom. But the computers themselves remain a cir…
Freundin hat ein "sehr altes" Thinkpad mit Ubuntu, das Reparaturbedarf hat. Wo würdet Ihr hingehen, am liebsten im oder um den Wedding?
Almost bought a refurb Thinkpad Carbon or a ThinkCenter to play with today. The silly thing stopping me was the realization that it would be Yet Another Thing to Place. Sigh.
If you're on kernel 6.15 or greater and still want to use your ThinkPad's power LED as a disk activity indicator, I've got your back. New version of the kernel module out now: https://github.com/theodric/block-led-trigger
The replacement Thinkpad E330 keyboard arrived yesterday, and I fitted it at lunchtime, and guess what? It's a UK keyboard layout!
What thrills I'm going to have this this *absolutely enormous enter key!*
Just about to install Ubuntu Studio on my younger boy's clapped out (munted) school BYOD Thinkpad (purchased refurbished 5 yrs ago) so I can use it for music recording. Maybe. If it works.
How's your Friday night going?
After weeks of use, I have now discovered that the exotic WiFi module installed in my mini PC is not recognized by Debian and cannot be used, as I was connected to the Internet via cable the whole time.
I only noticed this yesterday when I wanted to send a file to my computer via Localsend, which requires a connection via the same WLAN network. My ThinkPad T490s is also running Debian, and the WLAN module doesn't cause any problems there, and since I've only ever sent files ba…
@… oooo NetBSD on thinkpad x200. Cool stuff
Der olle #Schneider #CPC664 läuft noch! :-)
That took exactly two weeks and a bit.
Your laptop shouldn't be just a workhorse, it is an expression of you, used for work as well.
Hence my install of Slackware KDE on it, it was by far the best I used for the past year or so.
With a ThinkPad X13 gen 1 liveslaks turned out to be a bit of a challenge, but conferring with @… in the background …
It's really fucked up how when I write posts on work laptop (MacBook/Macos) vs. my own machine (Thinkpad/Linux) I end up with some many extra typos.
I don't think it's the MacBook keyboard (though it is a bit shit) it really is Macos' autocorrect.
Endlich die neue 1 TB SSD in das alte Thinkpad-Notebook eingebaut und #Lubuntu neu installiert. Läuft jetzt merklich schneller. Zuvor hatte ich schon den RAM von 4 auf 16 GB aufgerüstet.
Im having a mental battle of cheap vs lazy. I have an old Thinkpad laptop i use for teaching. (T40?) Circa 2015ish. But it works just fine, no issues with Fedora, and giving Garuda a try for now on it. Its a good laptop. Problem is that its heavy. And I have to carry a work laptop (MS Surface, win11) as well. And two laptops in the bag is a bit of weight. So I am debating getting a refurb X1 Carbon. But the cheap part of me is going "NOOOO". Ugh, internal conflicts.
The ThinkPad P14s Gen5 AMD has about 2.1 hours of battery life in Linux with the most conservative power profile selected. Bring a long extension cord if you're leaving the house.
The idea was (compared to my previous laptop):
- no black or grey, get rid of smudges
- smaller bezels
- wifi compatible with FreeBSD
- nice to have: 16Gb RAM
- lighter
- preferably no ThinkPad (to avoid paying the premium on that)
I can happily report back none of these wishes have been fulfilled with my new acquisition 😜 🤣
Tried Wayland Plasma 6 on openSUSE on a ThinkPad P14s G5 AMD last night:
-Firefox doesn't render properly
-TrackPoint is nearly unusably twitchy and doesn't respond to speed/acceleration settings
-Input latency makes it difficult to control the mouse pointer accurately
That was enough for me to log out and return to an X session. Once they finish deleting X11 from all distros and removing any X support from modern DEs, I guess I'll just get a Mac. We had a …
