Trump’s tariffs are running up against the limits of nature
The deeper you delve into the weird and wonderful world of aluminum,
the more you realize there are physical limits that make a resurgence of U.S. production unlikely.

Raw supply isn’t the problem.
There is more aluminum in the Earth’s crust than any other metal.
But finding a way of extracting it and turning it into a usable form was something we achieved surprisingly recently. -- Until then, it was the mo…

Krugman continues:
❝While there is a cadre of Trumpist true believers who will obey the Leader under any circumstances, most of those doing the dirty work of undermining democracy and the rule of law are cowards and opportunists. They’re willing to participate in the destruction of America as we know it because they believe that many others will do the same. As a result, they believe that they are unlikely to face any personal consequences for their actions and may even be rewarded for their lawbreaking.
And what of those who oppose Trumpism? While there are heroes willing to take a stand against tyranny whatever the personal cost, most anti-Trumpists are reluctant to stick their necks out unless they believe that they are part of a widespread resistance that will grant them some measure of safety in numbers.
In other words, the victory or defeat of competitive authoritarianism will depend to a large extent on which side ordinary people believe will win. If Trump looks unstoppable, resistance will wither away and democracy will be lost. On the other hand, if he appears weak and stymied, resistance will grow and — just maybe — American democracy will survive.❞

Language learning has been part of me since high school. I'm solid in 2 non-English languages, crappy but survivable in 2 others. I've played with & started learning others many times.
I'm real busy rn, but language learning could be a fun thing to do for myself & make me feel like I'm still me.
But I'm stumped about my language picks. I learnt the obvious European languages in school; later tried key Asian languages. What do I want to do now?
African languages? I won't be getting a chance to use them much in Aus, & I'm unlikely to get to a stage where I can read literature.
I tried Slovenian/Slovene on a whim & really love it, but I'll never go there. Is the practical but unfun answer grind out more kanji/hanzi? Or is whimsically learning a language spoken by only 2.5 million people reasonable? I will continue struggling through with Ukrainian, 'cause I think it's important.

As I look at people around me, rarely I see anyone with such a strong symptoms of pollen #allergy as I have. I suppose it's unlikely that all people with allergies manage to keep to their basements, so I'm wondering: is it that my allergy is unusually strong (or resilient to medicine), or are others taking more medicine than I do.
Today I've taken a third pill already (3.5 times the base dosage in total), and once again I'm starting to have a runny nose. And that's after 2 hours since last pill, spent sitting in trains. If the allergy doesn't kill me, the medicine will…

I honestly don’t get how this is possible in 2025.
There’s no excuse for not having protected backups of everything critical. That was true 30 years ago, it is true today. Back then a bigger piece of the risk was hardware, less malware. Today it is unlikely for a disk failure to take your data because we all learned that RAID was worthwhile. But RAID is not a backup and backups today need to be resistant to intentional malicious deletion.
