It is frustrating every single time that I see the popular votes versus seats won in Canadian elections.
Especially when you have a party like the Bloc Quebécois who run only in Québec, pull 1.2 million votes in that province, and receive 22 seats in the House, yet the NDP pulls 1.2 million across Canada and gets 7 seats.
All our system does is reward density, rather than delivering actual representation.
But someone please tell me how 'ranked ballots' will fix this*

For what it’s worth, we have a system in MN that’s not too far from this: if you’re not already registered to vote, you can show up on election day with one from a limited set of approved gov-issued photo IDs, •or• proof of residence such as a utility bill plus a registered neighbor who will legally vouch for you.
The result? We have some of the highest voter turnout rates in the country (often •the• highest), and just •vanishingly• small rates of fraudulent / illegal votes (because the consequences for such votes are just as severe as ever, not changed at all by the ease of same-day registration).

It’s what I believe since the beginning of the Iran bombardment.
Trump thought he could do like Venezuela. Quick change of power, put an ally in place, no occupying military force needed. Looks like a hero. That’s what he wants for Cuba too.
But now he’s in deep shit. Every day the war continues without a change of power, he looks like a loser. War is not popular and oil price is skyrocketing, the entire opposite of what the game plan was to get mid term votes.

Trump has privately described to aides and
Republican officials outside the White House
that his ideal outcome in Iran is one like the
emerging dynamic between the U.S. and
Venezuela since American special forces

People are •way• too focused on the personalities and inner thoughts of politicians, like politics is basically People magazine except with votes — and not nearly focused enough on when and where and how politicians are points of leverage, and tools we use for exercising our power.
My spicy take is that while many politicians are hideous people, in the median they’re actually much better humans beings than we tend to imagine — and that doesn’t matter, because they are leverage points in a system and not protagonists in a novel.

When Trump criticized a ruling from a so-called “Obama judge” in 2018,

But the data suggests that in the 13 appellate courts, there is increasingly such a thing as a Trump judge.

James Talarico’s victory in the Democratic Senate primary race in Texas
was powered in part by a sizable advantage among Latino voters,
a sought-after group that Democrats are hoping to win back.
Latino voters, historically a Democratic-leaning group,
have been slowly shifting to the right, including a significant move toward Trump in 2024.
This year’s midterm elections will be closely watched to see whether these voters who were moved to support Republicans tw…

In today's Texas Senate primary election, Republicans are measuring the potency of Trump’s Make America Great Again movement against old-guard conservatism. Democrats, meanwhile, face a choice between two progressive “powerhouses” with different theories of how to fight – and how to win – in the Trump era.
The fiercely competitive races have left Democrats unusually hopeful about their chances in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat statewide since 1994, while Republicans fret th…

You see some effort on the part of Congress to assert itself in the realm of war.
But it failed predominantly on party lines
Republicans predominantly were supporting the president and whatever it happens to be that he would like to do.
Moderate Republicans and Republicans who are in less safe districts were and are more likely to at least stand up a little bit to the president,
but there’s a very small number of them.

From polling and special elections over the past year, we’ve seen two important trends:
Democrats are strongly over-performing in general elections (to the tune of 10-15 points),
and Democratic leadership is incredibly unpopular, even among Democratic voters.
This combination means that there will be a lot of support
— in enthusiasm, money, and votes
— for primary challenges to Democratic incumbents,
and the usual Democratic fretting about electability …
