Yesterday, after a mild query by some parents, my daughter’s primary school sent out a notice to say they were going to stop using their X account for comms.
It’s as simple as that. There are plenty of alternatives.
But even if there weren’t you can’t contribute to that.
And it can be as simple as
asking to prompt a change.
My coffee advent calendar showed up yesterday, fully ⇓ of the way through traditional advent season.
Which is fine, since I can count down to Gregorian new year. Or wait until Julian Christmas? Or Isaac Newton’s birthday!
Today was pure hell. I was in extreme pain for almost 12 hours. About 5 more hours of discomfort and now the pain has subsided to a tolerable level. I am hoping for a much better tomorrow. (Yesterday was a really good day, so it seems one day can be fine and the next unbearable. I hate it.)
Yesterday, I had the honor to deliver an invited talk with the title "Convenience vs Competence: the Evolving Role of Foundational Knowledge in AI-Driven Research" at the new year's receiption of the computer science faculty at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Very happy to be at the place again, where I did my first PostDoc more than 20 years ago and meeting many old friends. :)

On the subway yesterday someone sitting next to me was scrolling through either twitter or bluesky; I couldn't tell which, and I didn't want to obviously stare. But it was incredibly tempted to turn to them and say, "Have you heard the good news? The good news about John Mastodon?" If only I had literature with me!
