Honestly, I find the decision in #Wine 9.0 to force #HidRaw by default for specific gamepads a very bad one. Apparently, it was done because these devices use "a proprietary HID protocol", and so they full functionality cannot be exposed via XInput. Well, okay. Except that there are two problems.
Firstly, using them via HidRaw requires special device permissions. In #Gentoo, this means installing games-util/game-device-udev-rules. If you don't do that, the controllers simply don't appear at all, and you don't know why. You have to look for answers. Even if you do, I have some doubts about giving extra permissions to stuff.
Secondly, it requires all software to support these gamepads explicitly. I mean, I've tried this with DualShock 4 in two games. In "Saints Row V", the gamepad work but the Y axis would be reversed for no apparent reason. In "A Plague Tale", the gamepad wouldn't be detected at all.
I prefer a gamepad that works over theoretical support for some fancy hidden features. So it's back to XInput for me:

@… Besides budget, I answered entirely honestly, and got the same two recommendations.
I suppose the Mac Studio *is* the Mac Pro of the day.

Honestly very impressed with the Anker soundcore A40s. After losing my AirPods case at work I ordered these until I can find the case or get a replacement.
These are already looking to become my new work earbuds (allowed one earbud at my new store) and my out and about earbuds.

James Fallows on respect for juries. I’ve been called many times but have never served on a jury. I don’t try to get out of it, but during the selection process, I answer the questions honestly and then the prosecutors reject me.

Abstract: When measuring the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) scale from galaxy surveys, one typically assumes a fiducial cosmology when converting redshift measurements into comoving distances and also when defining input parameters for the reconstruction algorithm. A parameterised template for the model to be fitted is also created based on a (possibly different) fiducial cosmology. This model reliance can be considered a form of data compression, and the data is then analysed allowing that the true answer is different from the fiducial cosmology assumed. In this study, we evaluate the impact of the fiducial cosmology assumed in the BAO analysis of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey Data Release 1 (DR1) on the final measurements in DESI 2024 III. We utilise a suite of mock galaxy catalogues with survey realism that mirrors the DESI DR1 tracers: the bright galaxy sample (BGS), the luminous red galaxies (LRG), the emission line galaxies (ELG) and the quasars (QSO), spanning a redshift range from 0.1 to 2.1. We compare the four secondary AbacusSummit cosmologies against DESI's fiducial cosmology (Planck 2018). The secondary cosmologies explored include a lower cold dark matter density, a thawing dark energy universe, a higher number of effective species, and a lower amplitude of matter clustering. The mocks are processed through the BAO pipeline by consistently iterating the grid, template, and reconstruction reference cosmologies. We determine a conservative systematic contribution to the error of $0.1\%$ for both the isotropic and anisotropic dilation parameters $\alpha_{\rm iso}$ and $\alpha_{\rm AP}$. We then directly test the impact of the fiducial cosmology on DESI DR1 data.

Fascinating... Hunga Tonga had a (small) net _cooling_ effect on the climate, despite the big dollop of water vapour it injected into the stratosphere:
