A few pictures from yesterday night at the #39C3

A dimly lit large room with some round and square tables. All sorts of light installations re cluttered on the table and in the room: LEDs on strings hanging from the ceiling that form a cylinder on one table, colorful LED stripes and theater lights in the background. The desks are filled with electronic equipment like 3D printers, laptops, power outlets and alike.

Powerful light beams shine through sparse fog and the reflections of the toroid mirrors are projected onto the walls. reading a prelim paper on scaling up gpu-accelerated database query engines and feeling kinda gobsmacked at where that world is at
i remember when we built a “massive” memory machine at princeton with … i think it was 256 MB of RAM. (it sat idle except when ken thompson was logged in and building hash tables for chess endgames which was most of the time)

Wenn Beamte, vor allem aus dem Bereichen Recht und Finanzen betrügen oder korrupt sind, dann müssten hier besonders strenge und harte Strafen verhängt werden.
Ich hoffe, dass die Finanzbeamtin, sollte ihre Schuld erwiesen werden, zu einer mehrjährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt werden und die Bänke, die in diesen Skandal verwoben sind. Sie gehören für Jahre hinter Gitter.

Yesterday I tried out Mistral OCR and… wow. I didn’t know that OCR of PDFs with complex layouts, tables, images and everything is basically a solved problem now? Will likely have it run OCR on a 250 page PDF to extract the full text and tables soon, at a cost of roughly 25 cents, if I read the pricing grid correctly. The initial test on a few representative pages was very promising. Next step is to give it a few pages of my terrible handwriting and see what happens 😅.
