Content warning: useful article on measles transmission

From Helen Branswell back in 2019:
"Let’s take a look at the tricks measles has up its sleeve: ...
"The so-called infectious dose for measles is small. And people who are infected emit a lot of viruses as they cough or even exhale. ...
"After someone breathes or coughs out the viruses, they can remain in the air for significant periods of time. In fact, it’s estimated that a susceptible child who entered a room — say a doctor’s waiting room — two hours after an infected child was there can become infected. ...
"... people who contract the virus are contagious for about eight days. Most importantly from a transmission point of view, half of that time is before they have developed the rash that typically lets people know: This child has measles. ...
"The introduction of measles vaccine drove down the number of cases to the point that now some doctors don’t recognize measles when confronted with it. ...
"The good news is the measles vaccine is one of the best around. Two doses of vaccine in childhood protect about 97 percent of the children who receive it."

Interesting and fulsome interview on exactly how NORAD reacted to the plane hijacking in Victoria/Vancouver on Tuesday. They speak to the commander of NORAD, currently a Canadian.
I appreciated the last section most though:
“It's the only bi-national command in the world; it's been a strong bi-national command since 1958, and nothing has changed.
We don't ever talk politics at work. It's not something that we do, nor does it affect what we do.
I would say that we are as tight, and probably tighter than we've ever been. As the world around us gets to be more dangerous, I would say that NORAD is even closer than it's ever been.
But one last thing — we have the watch. That's the slogan here for NORAD.
To give you a great example, all of the assessors, we all live on-base in homes that actually have a safe, we call it the SCIF. It's basically a classified room that has all of our systems. The days that you're on duty, you're either at work or in your house. Because the timelines are so small for answering the phone, you don't walk the dog; you don't do all these other things, and someone covers for you when you're going between work and home.
That's how important this mission is to us down here. It's really important for everybody in Canada to know that at NORAD, we have the watch”

Content warning: tuberculosis/neglect, USA

47's government being a menace to the whole world again. Tuberculosis in prisons means tuberculosis everywhere.
"Detainees have tested positive for tuberculosis at the Anchorage Correctional Complex in Alaska and Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, according to news reports. ...
"Tuberculosis thrives in carceral settings of all kinds. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or spits, and it only takes a few droplets to sicken someone. ...
"Almost everyone who contracts it needs treatment to survive, and those who do may live with lungs so damaged they struggle to breathe. ...
"Anyone in ICE custody with symptoms suggestive of tuberculosis is supposed to be placed into an airborne infection isolation room with negative pressure ventilation ...
"But ICE detention facilities don’t necessarily have such rooms ... The typical solitary cell does not use negative pressure, detention and medical researchers said. ...
"Experts expect the situation to get much worse in the months ahead. That’s because Trump’s drive to deport one million people hasn’t yet coincided with the height of flu season, or the GOP’s recent cuts to the health care system, or its exclusion of undocumented immigrants from several social programs."

Content warning: cybersecurity for UK businesses & govt

Excellent article by @…, given a timely illustration by AWS's problems this morning.
"... this year, multiple important companies not just in the UK but globally and ranging from manufacturers to retail stores have been knocked almost completely out of production by cyberattacks. ...
"... British businesses have to start doing more to secure their IT systems and to create plans for how to keep running if something happens – potentially with plans to run systems without networked computers or with pen-and-paper backups if required. ...
"In 2019 we knew that a future pandemic was inevitable at some point but the lessons from previous pandemics and pandemic wargame exercises had not and still have not been fully implemented. ...
"Since then, the foreseeable disasters like pandemics, climate change or malicious hackers have been joined by another one – a hostile government that actively controls our tech sector."

Content warning: Nicole Collier / Texas coercion (USPol)

Glaring coercion, principled refusal. Not much surprises me out of the US currently, but this did.
"House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R) said that Democrats who left the state would only be allowed to leave the chamber on Monday if they signed an agreement to be accompanied by an escort from the Texas Department of Public Safety."
Rep Nicole Chandler declined to sign the agreement, and "NBC News correspondent Ryan Chandler reported that Collier was "locked into the House chamber" because she refused to sign the document."
"In my heart I don't feel compelled to sign it"
"I'll just sit here, I don't know… I guess I'll wait til Wednesday."
!
This is the kind of integrity we need. Immense respect to her.
