I’ve worked over the past year to reduce the amount of noise in my consciousness on a daily basis.
By that I mean - information noise, not literal sounds “noise”. (That problem was solved long ago by some good earplugs and noise canceling earphones.)
I’ve gotten used to spending less time on social media, regularly blocking most apps on my devices (anything with a feed news, most work communication apps, etc.), putting my phone and other devices aside for extended periods of time. Often go to work places with my iPad explicitly having its WiFi turned off and selecting cafes that don’t offer WiFi at all.
Negotiated better boundaries at work and in personal life where I exchange messages with people less often but try to make those interactions more meaningful, and people rarely expect me to respond to requests in less than 24 hours. Spent a lot of time setting up custom notification settings on all apps that would allow it, so I get fewer pings. With software, choosing fewer cloud-based options and using tools that are simple and require as few interruptions as possible.
Accustomed myself to lower-tech versions of doing things I like to do: reading on paper, writing by hand, drawing in physical sketchbooks, got a typewriter for typing without a screen. Choosing to call people on audio more, trying to make more of an effort to see people in person. Going to museums to look at art instead of browsing Pinterest. Defaulting to the library when looking for information.
I’m commenting on this now for two reasons:
1. I am pretty proud of myself for how much I’ve actually managed to reduce the constant stream of modern life esp. as a remote worker in tech!
2. Now that I’ve reached a breaking point of reducing enough noise that it’s NOTICEABLE - I am struck by the silence. I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to navigate it and fill it. I made this space to be able to read and write and think more deeply - for now I feel stuck in limbo where I’m just reacquainting myself with the concept of having any space in my mind at all.

Thirteen years ago, a Brooklyn man’s child molestation conviction pierced a veil of silence in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community,
where many people who dared to report sexual abuse were shunned, expelled from schools and had businesses ruined.
Now the man, Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed therapist who was sentenced to 103 years in prison, could be on a path to freedom.
Mr. Weberman, 67, is scheduled to appear in court next month, with a judge set to decide whether to comm…

Zapatista Solidarity Network! on Instagram: "📢‼️URGENT On November 26, 2025, Indigenous land defender Marcos Aguilar Rojas was assassinated for protecting his ancestral territory in San Lorenzo de Azqueltán, Jalisco, Mexico. He leaves behind five young children — including two babies — and elderly parents who depended on him. Marcos was a devoted father, a loving son, and a guardian of Mother Earth. He refused to abandon his community despite threats and violence. This was a planned political attack from those trying to steal Indigenous ancestral territory. ✨ That’s why we are asking for your solidarity: @semillas_collective is collecting donations that will go directly to Marcos’s family and Indigenous community to support: • His children’s wellbeing (food, housing, education) • Care for his parents • Community protection against further attacks • Legal justice for his assassination 🔗Link in our bio to the fundraiser and the communiqué from the Autonomous Indigenous Community or San Lorenzo de Azqueltán (adherents of the National Indigenous Congress [CNI]) 📣Please donate if you are able. If you cannot, share and help us break the silence. Marcos lives in the land, in his children, and in our struggle. Marcos vive — la lucha sigue. ✊🏽💚🌱 #JusticeForMarcos #Semillas #IndigenousSolidarity #Azqueltán #LandBack #ProtectLandDefenders #NoMoreImpunity #MarcosVive #LaLuchaSigue"

A nighttime urban street scene illuminated by a bright streetlight. In the foreground, a row of identical bicycles is neatly parked, likely part of a bike-sharing system. The light casts strong shadows and highlights the metallic frames. Behind the bikes is a decorative wall with vertical bars, possibly a fence, and trees with sparse leaves visible above it. A solar panel is mounted on the streetlight pole. On the right edge, a car with headlights on …

English Alt Text:
A fluffy white cat with darker markings sits calmly on a cushioned chair with a metal frame. The room is dimly lit, creating a moody and intimate atmosphere. The cat faces slightly left, its fur soft and voluminous. In the background, household items are scattered: a table, a cup, hanging clothes, and a curtain. The black-and-white tone adds a nostalgic, almost cinematic feel to the domestic scene.

A busy urban street scene under an elevated highway. On the sidewalk, a man sits on a motorcycle next to a cart filled with goods, possibly for sale. Parked motorcycles and bicycles line the pavement. Trees and a metal railing frame the foreground. In the background, multiple buses and cars, including a sleek black sports car, move along the road. The scene captures the energy of city life, blending transit, commerce, and infrastructure.

A bustling indoor market corridor stretches into the distance. Shops line both sides, selling clothes, packaged goods, and miscellaneous items. Shoppers walk through, some browsing. The ceiling has exposed beams and hanging lights. Signs with Chinese characters hang above the stalls.
