At this point today I'm willing to light anything on fire with the word "Plex" on it. I've never had a server fight me so goddammed hard. It's taken 10x more effort to rebuild the Plex server than it did to build the Jellyfin server. However, that part of the Great Migration is done and I only have two more servers to move over to Debian.

When the government offers to provide rebates or tax credits to low income Canadians, as recently announced by our Federal Government, most welcome the extra cash. But it doesn't address the key issue in affordable food, housing, or utilities. All of that extra government cash, provided by taxpayers BTW, gets sucked up by corporations that continue to rake in record profits. If you want to truly attack the #Affordability problem then implement laws that penalize excess profit taking by corporations. Take key necessities (food, transit, shelter, utilities, etc.) and create public options that are run as cooperatives and have controlled profit margins.
Marit Styles points out the difference between food prices at independent grocers versus the big chains. The policy position from @… on establishing a public grocery option makes sense, as long as we also protect the small independent vendors in our communities.

Finished prepping the NESessity NES mainboard for the new front loader mechanism. I got lazy when I installed all the components on the NESessity board and maybe didn't clean the flux off as well as I should have. However, since I've gotten open the NES up, figured I'd do a proper 99% isopropyl alcohol bath and a good scrub. The board is looking great, now to wait for the cartridge slot to come in and get it buttoned up again.

I'm pretty stoked as I sit here drinking a celebratory beer: finally paid off the credit card. Took a long while, but I'm pretty happy looking at the $0 balance on it. Das Fünfte Gesetz zur Änderung dienstrechtlicher Vorschriften wurde am 23. Januar 2026 veröffentlicht. ☝️
Warum ist das interessant? Nun ja, man kann als Beamter ja in die gesetzliche Krankenversicherung gehen und zahlt dann einfach alles selbst, d.h. es wird meistens viel teurer als die "Frankenstein-Lösung" Beihilfe Restversicherung.
Ab 1.1.26 übernimmt das Land nun 50% der GKV Beiträge.
Zu Kindern steht hier aber noch nix...

The oldest winter festival opened its ice gates to the public yesterday and runs to February 15th. The Quebec Winter Carnival was first held in 1894 but became an annual event starting in 1955. It's not the largest in the world but it's in the top 2, and record crowds are expected since most Canadians aren't interested in being interrogated at our southern border.
#Bonhomme is the generic term for a figure ( bonhomme de sucre , "sugar baby"; bonhomme de neige , "snowman"). The beloved character who represents the Quebec Winter Carnival lives a pampered life. He has the keys to the city, from the mayor in 1955, and has a new ice castle built for him every year. He also retires someplace cozy after the event and returns refreshed and ready for next year, unlike European festival snowmen who are burned at the close of activities to bring forth spring. Bonhomme has a better manager obviously.

München -> Magdeburg in 5h 6m. Klingt erstmal gut, aber das teilt sich auf in:
2h 56m München -> Halle an der Saale (ca. 450km)
1h 1m Aufenthalt in Halle an der Saale. (ca. 107m)
1h 9m Halle -> Magdeburg (ca. 100km).
Magdeburg ist bahntechnisch schon irgendwie abgehängt, jedenfalls bei den Südverbindungen. Oft ist es gleich schnell erst nach Hannover zu fahren und von da nach München.

Aber das Traurige an der Sache ist ja, dass ich als ordentlich entlohnter Beamter jetzt mit der PV WP Kombi gerade in diesen Tagen (man muss noch Heizen aber es gibt schon ordentlich Strom vom Dach) praktisch keine Heizkosten mehr habe, während die Mieter*innen und Mieter das jetzt ausbaden müssen.
Aber auch dieser SNAFU wird nicht reichen um Reiche bloßzustellen. Heutzutage perlt sowas ja an Politiker*innen einfach ab, wenn sie komplett unwissenschaftlich argumentieren. Traurig.

Just a few years after we were married my wife and I rented the upper half of a duplex near High Park. The East-West road we lived on was considerably higher than the one south of us and we could see Lake Ontario through gaps in the houses across the street. I learned this week that a few years ago I could have had beachfront access out my front door.
Glacial Lake Iroquois was a prehistoric proglacial lake that existed at the end of the last ice age approximately 13,000 years ago. It was essentially an enlargement of the present Lake Ontario that formed because the St. Lawrence River downstream from the lake was blocked by the ice sheet near the present Thousand Islands. The level of the lake was approximately 30 m above the present level of Lake Ontario. Being born 13,000 years too late probably saved me from paying a lakefront premium on my rent.

The Severn River, #19 on our #CanadaRivers countdown, flows for 982 km, from Deer Lake near Kenora to Fort Severn on the shore of Hudson's Bay. It's the same length as the Albany River (next on our list) and both are the longest rivers entirely within Ontario. The Severn River drainage basin area is 102,800 km2 , a small portion of which is in Manitoba, and it has a modest volume of 645 m3/s as it meanders northeast. Historical records state that the mouth of the river was located by the English in 1631, but I'm pretty sure Indigenous people discovered it a few thousand years before that. Fort Severn was established as a trading post in 1689 by the Hudson's Bay Company but was captured by Pierre le Moyne, sieur d'Iberville in 1690. The post, rebuilt in 1759, has been in continuous operation to this day making this community one of the oldest European settlements in Ontario.

Der Lecksensor hat einfach unten 2 Metallkontakte und wenn er im Wasser steht werden sie verbunden und er piept. Funktioniert.
Der CO2-Sensor ist klasse und auch als Schreibtischuhr geeignet. CO2 Level in meinem Büro ist auch bei längerem Mathe machen nicht erhöht. 🧐

We still have 20 rivers to highlight in this #CanadaRivers series and a couple of things stand out. We are now listing rivers that are close to 1,000 kms, and despite the size there are many I've never heard of. Add in several million lakes and you gotta agree that Canada is blessed with #Hydrology features.
The Thelon River, called Akilinik in Inuit, is #21 on our list and stretches 904 kms across northern Canada. Its source is Whitefish Lake in the Northwest Territories, and it flows east to Baker Lake in Nunavut, ultimately draining into Hudson Bay. It is fed by a watershed of 142,400 km2 but with a vertical drop of less than 400 metres over its length it is not suitable for hydroelectric development. The Thelon is one of the easiest tundra rivers to paddle, with a steady current, few rapids and no portages. It therefore is a destination for paddling vacations and tourists looking to experience Canada's north.
