OTD in 1977, Tim Severin landed on Peckford Island, Newfoundland. Severin had set sail from Ireland on May 17th with a five-man crew in a boat built using only techniques and materials available in sixth-century Ireland. The arduous 7,300km journey was meant to prove that St. Brendon had discovered North America almost 1,000 years before Columbus.
