An abstract black-and-white double exposure photograph blending two scenes. The first layer shows trees reflected in calm water, evoking a peaceful natural setting. The second layer overlays a tabletop with various objects, possibly food items or small tools, and a bucket with faint text. The fusion of nature and human-made elements creates a surreal, dreamlike composition. The textures and tones merge softly, inviting interpretation a…

English Alt Text:
A black-and-white photograph of a futuristic high-rise building. The central tower features a cylindrical shape that narrows into a pointed spire, resembling a rocket or needle. The facade is patterned with alternating horizontal stripes in light and dark tones, giving it a sleek, modern appearance. Windows are arranged in a uniform grid across the surface. To the left, another building with balconies is partially visible. A traffic light pole stands in th…

I agree with the storyteller: the experience of having a slave is abhorrent, simulated or not, and this story is a window into something •deep• about the present moment. Even without having slaves, we are all in danger of having a •slaver mindset•. It’s a disease that’s running rampant now in billionaire-shaped techno-utopian circles.
I wrote this thread on the topic earlier:

…and even having written that, it’s still shocking — not surprising, exactly, but shocking — to hear those thoughts expressed so baldly by the colleague in the story above.

BREAKING: #CPython 3.13.10 and 3.14.1 changed the multiprocessing message format in patch release. As a result, programs using multiprocessing may break randomly if they are running while #Python is upgraded (i.e. need restarting).
But apparently it's not a big deal, since all the cool kids are running Python in containers, and nobody is using Python for system tools anymore. Everything has been RIIR-ed and Python is only omnipresent in some backwaters like #Gentoo.

Big Think is pop-sci drivel with a questionable cast of ‘experts’ that still lives on MechaHitler’s CSAM-generating platform and (based on its accessibility statement) uses an overlay (I block them, so not sure which).
An author citing Ayn Rand is just icing.

There have been numerous disgustingly fake 'nightscape' composites flooding the web where someone had merely pasted a deep astronomical image of comet C/2026 A6 #Lemmon into some landscape, making it look like it was a giant rivalling Ikeya-Seki oder West - oh, how I hated that. And what a relief that NOIRLab has now posted - noirlab.edu/public/images/iotw - this beautiful and apparently unmanipulated picture of Lemmon over Mauna Kea on 12 November. Yes, it reached 3 point something mag. and had nice tails in the end but it was not a great comet by any means: just look how small and faint it appears next to the southern Milky Way!
