In 2022 I drove across Canada from Ottawa to northern BC. I remember driving for three full days around the top of Lake Superior with a wall of mostly dead trees on either side of the road the whole way, thinking, man when Ontario burns, there's going to be no stopping it. And here we are.

Balkendiagramm zur Anzahl der Inbetriebnahmen von Balkonkraftwerken in Deutschland von 2018 bis 31.08.2026. In den Jahren 2018 bis 2021 sind die Installationen sehr gering. Ab 2022 steigt die Zahl stark an: über 65.000 Anlagen im Jahr 2022, über 290.000 im Jahr 2023 und über 440.000 in den Jahren 2024 und 2025. Die Balken deutet auf einen anhaltenden Boom hin.

3 years ago, I replaced the bottom bracket bearing for the bike I use at Burning Man after it self-destructed from rust in 2022. I bought one that claims to be waterproof, but prepping this year, I noticed the pedals weren't moving nicely, so took it apart and the new bearing is rusted.
Maybe it is waterproof? Definitely not dust proof. Most of what was in there was the lithium grease now turned into paste with playa dust.
So this time, I'm trying enclosed bearings. Maybe…

In 2022 I installed my archive copy of 1Password 4.1 on a new machine. It would not honor my 2016 license key (1Password killed its license server killed when it went SaaS).
1Password support tried very hard to move me to the SaaS model (3 free years!), but I repeatedly declined.
I eventually got 1Password support to give me an _older_ version that didn’t talk to a license server.
And I feel much better about standing firm now that 1Password has gone full fash.

An wie vielen Tagen im Jahr ich überhaupt aufs Rad steige:
2020: 20 %
2022: 64 %
2023: 88 %
2024: 99 %
2025: 97 %
2026: 100 %
Das ist der Wandel, der mir selbst am wenigsten aufgefallen ist. Nicht weiter, nicht schneller. Nur keine Lücken mehr.
Irgendwann hat es aufgehört, eine Entscheidung zu sein.

Ein Streudiagramm zeigt die Entwicklung der Bruttoleistung (kWp) von Balkonsolarkraftwerken in Deutschland ab 2018. Jeder orange Punkt steht für eine Anlage. Die meisten Anlagen liegen unter 2 kWp, mit Ausreißern bis über 30 kWp. Die Anzahl und Leistung steigen ab 2022 deutlich an und sind anscheinend mit Inkrafttreten des „Solarpaketes“ am 16. Mai 2024 auf 2 kWp begrenzt.
