The article is from a few years ago, but the problem still persists. The Robert Roberson case in Texas is a perfect example. "Everybody knows" that shaken baby syndrome kills kids. But the reality is that the science isn't settled. But it's painfully difficult to break the throttlehold that some things have on the court system.

In a note to the Globe newsroom, Barnes said she is stepping down at the end of next week and will stay on staff as an editor-at-large.
