@… The people at Wolfram have done a gorgeous visualisation of the trajectory
I realise on the fediverse this is maybe asking for a flaming, but yesterday out of sheer curiosity I tried Claude for a simpleish coding task that I'd been putting off (largely inspired by @… 's latest on #theclimatebrink). The performance of Claude was seriously impressive. I am convinced the AI cycle is more than hype (and have been for a while), the chatbots have been a huge attention hogger, misleadingly so, while the serious work has been done elsewhere. (We are developing ML tools to supplement parts of our climate model workflows).
Now I'm wondering if there is any serious EU competition to Anthropic? - Mistral's codestral perhaps?
Because this kind of performance changes everything and we can't afford to lag behind...

Our world is run by monsters. Like, literal monsters.
I've seen plenty of films and books where the "monster" might harm or destroy only a handful of humans before being vanquished, and yet, our governments have killed how many?
The people in charge have done damage to our world we cannot reverse.
The real monsters live among us, not in stories or fantasy.
How do we end these monsters?
So I guess the Strait of Hormuz isn't going to open itself, and the US isn't just going to walk away, and a lot more damage will be done to energy infrastructure all around the Gulf, and the chatter of the past 48 hours was just that... talking down the markets. Buckle up, this could get interesting. https://ww…

I really think that we _are_ starting to build those tools. I'm party to a lot of discussions about how to use these tools well, and a lot of that starts to look like systems design: what are controls? What are the feedback loops? Where do we need to add new frictions? Where do we need to eliminate old bottlenecks?
We are still very, _very_ early in this.
But the work is getting done, and a lot of us 'haters' need to get in the drivers seat and start putting up useful critique like mttaggart's. I don't agree with the entire article, but it's solid work and solid case report. It’s very good stuff. We need a lot more of these conversations.
And we need to let people hate it. Not to be confused with obstinate blocking, but to have the feelings of hating it, of disliking the processes it engenders, of finding those new footings — or rejecting the bad ones. We can't look at this clearly unless we have the space to hate it.

I will once again repeat what I think is a nationally winning campaign for a US opposition party (should any care to exist), now with Berlatsky’s improved phrasing:
❝If elected, I will fight like hell to:
- destroy Donald Trump, everything he has done, and everything he stands for,
- tax the living shit out of billionaires, and
- use that money to repair the damage they’ve done to the US.❞
Not saying that’s everything that needs to happen, or an entire political philosophy, or the solution to everything. Only saying that I think that — simply that — would win elections. Try it and see. For most human societies, for 10s of 1000s of years (unlike the typical current western version) death was a process, not an event. The rituals surrounding a death existed to guide the decedent from this world to whatever came next. Rituals done wrongly, or not at all, could result in the dead returning, often cranky or angry or worst case, malevolent. This often happened in times of political or religious or medical turmoil, resulting in pandemics of

Whatever damage the secretaries inflict on their country or their reputations is done on the president’s orders and on his behalf.

In the second term, it means keeping them in the job for as long as those shields retain even marginal power.

Vibe coding provides a tantalizing answer in that situation: maybe it’s too varied to •abstract•, but not too varied to •plagiarize• and call it good.
This is something subtly different from abstraction. It’s not “do this in the standard way.” Instead, it’s “just rip off whatever other people are doing right now.”
A lot of people really want that — and tbh, a lot of them are not wrong to want it. I personally love the craft of programming, but let’s face it, a lot of software out there just needs to look like everything else and be done with it.
Took a look at the ngscopeclient "fall time" filter since it's the next in line alphabetically for some refactoring and decided hey, the inner loop is pretty simple let's try GPUing it.
