If you want to get some deep thinking done, get your head out of your SaaS.
I’m using Claude-code to get stuff done that I couldn’t have done before. I just spent a non-frustrating hour or so successfully changing a system written mostly in typescript (which I’ve never used) to do a bunch of things differently. I’m telling it what I want the system to do (with BDD tests where possible) and it’s figuring out the code changes. Several days work for a human, weeks if I had to find someone to do it for me. Like this:
What Russell
Vought has done in the nine months
since Trump took office
goes much further than slashing foreign aid.
Relying on an expansive theory of presidential power
and a willingness to test the rule of law,
he has frozen vast sums of federal spending,
terminated tens of thousands of federal workers
and, in a few cases, brought entire agencies to a standstill.
In early October,
after Senate Democrats refused to vote for a bud…
And another couple of etch cycles on the PIC12F683 done.
On the home stretch, I've almost got the last of the dielectric off. But I don't want to be too aggressive because ideally I'd get a beauty shot of intact poly across the whole die first, *then* undercut the poly and get a substrate image.
So I'm still doing my usual 2 minutes etch, then image routine. It'll take as long as it takes.
Every year, near the end of my accelerated intro class (0190), I've done the Halting Problem and briefly mentioned Rice's Theorem. It's finally(!) dawned on me that Rice's is more fundamental. Re-jigging class design! Also great to tie it up with, e.g., code.pyret.org .
A guy I know said he was way more productive when using AI.
My question:
"Are you able to get your work done in fewer hours and spend that time not working, maybe spending it with your family, or doing hobbies or other pleasurable activities? Or do you just do more work?"
Their Answer:
"I work the same hours but now productivity is up so it is not a benefit to myself or society. However, I think the opposite. The quality of work I produce in that time is…
Cropp's Law:
The amount of work done varies inversly with the time spent in the
office.
In one case, it turns out that an all-male client group was giving vicious beratings (undeserved!) to a female project manager when they had her cornered alone. I had no idea.
In the moment, I found those men kind of obnoxiously self-confident in their ignorance, but nothing worse. Later they want on a Trumpian scorched earth campaign trying not to pay everyone for work already done and threatening lawsuits willy nilly. They turned out to be horrible people. Missing that early red flag of misogyny cost us all — but especially that manager.

I fear I am living in a crap 70s sitcom.
We are having some building work done next week so we've ordered a skip to be delivered today. Also today our next door neighbours are moving out.
Skip wagon arrives about 11-ish, knocks next door who tell him that no they haven't ordered a skip but they know that next door (i.e. us) is waiting for one. Skippy rings my doorbell, delivers the skip and drives off.
90 minutes later another skip wagon turns up, rings my doorbell and says "there's no room for your skip because you've already got one". Which obviously I do.
Meanwhile the new next door neighbours are starting to move in and say "is that our skip?"
Given they're both 8 yard skips you'd think they could just deliver ours next door but apparently not as it's a different skip company. So he spent 30 minutes shuffling skips between our driveway & next door.
There's some rich scientific literature on volunteering and how volunteer motivations change and shift from initial engagement to sustained contributing, including some work we've done in that space around motivations for engaging with self-research communities.
Maybe it's time for a another blog post to look at that in more detail 😅
Thinking about all the citizen data that our government is shipping offshore to AU & elsewhere... there're apparently indications that Russian vessels have been hovering around undersea data cables in the north Atlantic... some suspect they've installed charges on all cables supplying data to Europe. In a future conflict, they could use these to continually disrupt European communications & intelligence. Who's to say that the US/China/others? haven't done the same to …

I have to laugh. In most TV movies and shows, if someone receives a head injury of any kind, it seems to be the supreme goal of any who attend the injured person to keep them conscious at all times. Of course, there's no reason that this needs to be done. I wonder where this came from.
Having just watched #Jaws for the first time in ages, I was stunned by the famous opening sequence ... but not by its cinematography or acting or editing - but by the never-ending chain of in-your-face #continuity errors in lighting once the girl enters the water: one moment we have a low Sun and a red sky, then we have the Sun near the zenith (with a day for night effect) then low again and so on, for several cycles.
Now #Spielberg, is there supposed to be some hidden message here? Well, there isn't.
(Once it's day, fortunately, this problem is gone, and a great movie unfolds, still fresh after 50 years. And I know, you shouldn't mess with a masterpiece, but Lucas added characters to Star Wars IV, and Cameron corrected a wrong star pattern in Titanic, so may be Spielberg could just, for an anniversary special edition ... o.k., I shut up. ;-)
The whole hubhub around Mozilla, Firefox, and AI is interesting because I'm of two minds:
* I really, *really* don't want AI in my browser. I don't see the point.
* If my browser must have AI (b/c some asshole CEO has decided it _must_ be done), the way Mozilla is proposing it is probably the best case scenario, at least the way it has been described.

You know with Thunderbird, depending on how it was installed, it might have the curled-up bird icon, or it might have the white envelope on a blue background...
Well, is there a way to have the curled up bird for the main window, and the white envelope for a window where you're currently writing a new email? or something similar? In other words, is there any place you can poke in the settings and set a different icon for a different window-purpose?
I sort of feel like back in the mists of time I might have seen that done, but I can't be sure.

One of the great shames of my software career is that I have not once but •twice• been a part of a project where I found out only after I was off the project that a male manager or client had been just absolutely, utterly •wretched• to a female teammate.
In both cases, it happened out of my sight. I had no idea what was going on.
I still think to this day about my obliviousness: how I could have found out sooner, what warning signs I missed, what I could have done to stick up for my female colleagues.

My takeaways from the bincode situation:
* Assume good intentions (while verifying), never dox (duh).
* Normalize having a non-empty .mailmap in repostiories so that name changes can be done less intrusively without calling attention.
* When doing a full-tree rebase, provide a simple text along with it that gives a filter-branch-or-so command that converts an old history into a bit-identical new one (where the old name/data can sit in a nonspecific regexp).

One of the top stories on Hacker News today was a post arguing that Mozilla shouldn't accommodate any usage of AI in Firefox because (understandably) people were mad at Big AI companies for all the horrible things they've done to users and the internet and society. But I think people are ignoring the reality that *hundreds of millions of users* are using LLMs today, and they need to have tools from platforms that will look out for their interests.

Needs windows and a banner and maybe a siren light anyway when its done.
Syndicalism is the idea that workers should organize themselves into unions within their industries and use those unions to take control of workplaces, so workers—not bosses or shareholders—run things directly and democratically.
Think of it like everyone at your job working together to decide how things are made, what gets done, and how profits are shared, rather than having one boss making all the choices and getting the biggest share.
I like when people get in touch with me about interesting projects but not when it's super-complex and they would "ideally like it done by the first week of December" because there's no way that is happening.
