What sites should I avoid because there's a danger of finding PDFs/ePubs you can't legally find anywhere on the web, like mid 20th century books?
Started the day 1.5hrs earlier to get some work done before leaving home to hike but made zero progress because:
- Laptop restarted overnight for no apparent reason. No crash. Update history says nothing for 10 days.
- 20 mins recreating environment: various logins, PPTs, PDFs, web pages, dev environ,…
- Noticed a license change that potentially interferes w a plan, researched origins and explanations.
- Stuff
- Need a sit down 😩

Adobe launches AI Assistant in Acrobat in beta, to summarize PDFs, answer and recommend questions, and more, letting paying users "easily chat with documents" (Jess Weatherbed/The Verge)

@… @… Thank you, Al! The docs are top-notch,
I have at least one of the PDFs open daily as reference.
Do any of my connections have experience with LangChain?
I'll preface this with "I'm not a dev/coder".
I have a question on loading data. Say I have I am pointing to a directory of PDFs that I want to chat with. I start a chat session, it indexes it all into a vector db and I can chat with it. What happens when I add a new PDF in the directory? Does it update it does it wait until I restart the session?
This morning, I opened a PDF to find Adobe Acrobat giving me an AI-generated summary of it. That led to a rabbit hole of finding all the places Acrobat’s AI Assistant has to be turned off. Here they are: https://www.wordsbywes.ink/articles/tools/turnin…

It's kinda weird that the PDF viewer/editor in Firefox is probably the best version to use for people on GNOME if you need more than mere viewing (adding an image/highlighting, etc).
I know there is Okular for KDE which is very good but I don't wanna pull in half of the K* stack just to add a signature to a bunch of PDFs.

Considering how we just lost Vice, kind of feel better about my choice to start my own lists of things. One thing I toyed with was providing PDFs of articles I recommend 30 days after the Penguin Pick just in case things go down like they did somewhere else. We need more proactive archiving.

One of the most underrated Calibre features is the ability to full-text search and index the content of your books and PDFs.
It is not a surprise, though, because that feature is unbelievably hidden in an already kinda messy UI.

People who ask for your opinion then get mad/argumentative when you tell them what they don't want to hear deserve to be in the bad place. Not that bad place, but the place where they're forced to do endless helpdesk calls showing executives how to open PDFs.
Pixelmator Pro adds editable PDF support. Not editable forms, not the ability to drop text boxes on top of an existing document, it converts the document’s text vectors back into editable text.
