Finished the short story, “The Answer is No” by Fredrik Backman, the story of a man without any attachments who just wants to be left alone to eat pad thai & play video games. The neighbors in his apartment keep intruding upon his privacy in ludicrously farcical ways.
Great writer & some great moments, but the whole thing felt like a collection of tropes. Had there been a laugh track on the audiobook, I’d not have been surprised.

Hey @… I was just listening to the great literary olfactoloy episode with @allylouks.bsky.social€, but I feel that the existence/role of human pheromones has been a bit misrepresented.
I have worked on mammalian pheromones for my PhD, and I have encountered (at least) two major definitions of the term "pheromone", one based on the function of a substance, and the other, which I personally prefer, on the information flow involved in it (https://doi.org/10.1159/000096511).
Based on the Sbarbati & Osculati definition, a pheromone would be a component that conveys information between individuals of the same species.
There is also quite a bit of research that argues for the existence of human pheromones (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1002/ar.a.20125, https://doi.org/10.1002/ar.a.20125, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1198331)
However, the discussion on the existence of human pheromones is difficult, as it touches on the topic of free will as many reactions to odor are involuntary. During the International Symposium on Olfaction and Taste held in Iceland in 2024, there have been several session on human olfaction touching on sensitive aspects such as olfaction-mediated effects on mate choice and pregnancy, but none of the researchers dared utter the word pheromone, while colleagues working on other mammals where happily talking about pheromonal effects for very similar topics.
Long story short, I feel that saying there is no hard evidence for human pheromones is misrepresenting the current research.

How will this endless, brutal spectacle of killing finally end?
Will it be like a movie
— justice prevailing, liberation won, goodness triumphing over evil?
Will the ending even be worthy of the horrors we’ve endured?
Or will it all fade away in an open-ended scene, full of unknowns, unanswered questions, and the absence of closure?
Will I make it to the final scene?

Looked up a truly dreadful piece of CanLit I was made to read in high school (because the author is now subject to book bans in Alberta), it seems whoever was writing the Wikipedia article fell asleep mid sentence, which is quite relatable given the subject material

Finished “Trap Line”, a short story by Timothy Zahn.
Interstellar travel is possible by transporting your consciousness to a cloned body already at the destination. But when an engineer is sent to repair a spacecraft’s communications array, he is instead entrapped in his disembodied state by aliens. The only way out, say fellow entrapped aliens, is death.
Enjoyable, but somewhat lacking, like a junk food version of Andy Weir.

Finished “Abscond”, a short story by Abraham Verghese.
