I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy gifts.
I can get why people would give them to children. After all, children don't have their own budget. However, I'm talking about occasional gifts, not a new toy every second week, because "we must outcompete the other grandparents". But to adults?
Once I've heard that you should gift people with what they won't buy themselves. Well, that's won't work for me. I'm a minimalist. If I don't need something, I don't want to have it. Unnecessary junk is only emotional burden to me.
I can get why you'd enjoy something handmade. But something people bought? If I need something, I can buy it myself, when I need it. And I definitely don't need people to prove to me that they never cared to learn who I am, and just buy whatever they like or whatever is "fashionable"; which usually means exactly the opposite of what I'd prefer (i.e. something minimalistic). Or even worse, I don't need people manipulating me through gifts.
Sweets? Besides my diabetes, I don't really enjoy expensive shit that people generally buy because it's what's advertised. For the money they waste on it, I'd buy three times as much sweets I'd actually enjoy.
Gift cards? Oh yes, "you aren't supposed to give money, so let's just give the equivalent of money that's actually worth less than money". Actual money? And here we reach the true nonsense; we exchange the same amount of money, so it's just pointless gesture. Unless one of us gives less money…
What I'd really like, as a gift? Maybe that people would finally bother accepting me as who I am. The absolute minimum of caring that I hate consumerism, and not fueling it "for me".

I feel as though I should illustrate the difference that this one single constraint can make by two examples.
The rules of Simon Says are maximally authoritarian. You must perform any action ordered, with the only restriction that the authority must say "Simon says" first. Were you forced to stay in this system, it would be the most despotic autocracy possible. But it's not. It's a silly game because you can leave at any time.
Let's flip this and imagine a room. During a specific period of time you will have absolute control over everything in this room. In this room you have total freedom. This is not even the limited freedom, the coordinated freedom, the compromising freedom of civil society. You could, without consequence, perform any action you wish in this room. You could say anything, destroy or steal any object, order any individual to perform any action, kill any person in the room with you and take anything they own. This is the sovereign freedom, the absolute freedom, of dictators and kings. The only restriction is that you are not allowed to leave the room while you have this freedom. In fact, you really only have this level of freedom because the room is actually empty other than for you. I am, of course, talking about a form of torture still common in the US: solitary confinement.

High-precision luminescence cryothermometry strategy by using hyperfine structure

arXiv:2511.19088v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: A novel, to the best of our knowledge, ultralow-temperature luminescence thermometry strategy is proposed, based on a measurement of relative intensities of hyperfine components in the spectra of Ho$^{3 }$ ions doped into a crystal. A $^{7}$LiYF$_4$:Ho$^{3 }$ crystal is chosen as an example. First, we show that temperatures in the range 10-35 K can be measured using the Boltzmann behavior of the populations of crystal-field levels separated by an energy interval of 23 cm$^{-1}$. Then we select the 6089 cm$^{-1}$ line of the holmium $^5I_5 \rightarrow ^5I_7$ transition, which has a well-resolved hyperfine structure and falls within the transparency window of optical fibers (telecommunication S band), to demonstrate the possibility of measuring temperatures below 3 K. The temperature $T$ is determined by a least-squares fit to the measured intensities of all eight hyperfine components using the dependence $I(\nu) = I_1 \exp(-b\nu)$, where $I_1$ and $b = a\nu \frac{\nu}{kT}$ are fitting parameters and a accounts for intensity variations due to mixing of wave functions of different crystal-field levels by the hyperfine interaction. In this method, the absolute and relative thermal sensitivities grow at $T$ approaching zero as $\frac{1}{T^2}$.and $\frac{1}{T}$, respectively. We theoretically considered the intensity distributions within hyperfine manifolds and compared the results with experimental data. Application of the method to experimentally measured relative intensities of hyperfine components of the 6089 cm$^{-1}$ PL line yielded $T = 3.7 \pm 0.2$ K. For a temperature of 1 K, an order of magnitude better accuracy is expected.

The law comes later…if ever. With these people on our streets right now, the only thing that matters in the moment is what people believe: what they believe the law is, what they believe is safe, what they believe they can get away with, what they believe they are capable of doing.

Day 19 (a bit late): Alice Oseman
As I said I've got 14 authors to fit into two days. Probably just going to extend to 30? But Oseman gets this spot as an absolute legend of queer fiction in both novel & graphic novel form, and an excellent example of the many truths queer writers have to share with non-queer people that can make everyone's lives better. Her writing is very kind, despite in many instances dealing with some dark stuff.
I started out on Heartstopper, which is just so lovely and fun to read, and then made my way through several of her novels. The one I'll highlight here which I think it's her greatest triumph is "Loveless", which is semi-autobiographical and was at least my first (but no longer only) experience with the "platonic romance" sub-genre. It not only helped me work through some crufty internal doubts about aro/ace identities that I'd never really examined, but in the process helped improve my understanding of friendship, period. Heck, it's probably a nice novel for anyone questioning any sort of identity or dealing with loneliness, and it's just super-enjoyable as a story regardless of the philosophical value.
To cheat a bit more here on my author count, I recently read "Dear Wendy" by Ann Zhao, which shouts out "Loveless" and offers a more expository exploration of aro/ace identities, but "Loveless" is a book with more heart and better writing overall, including the neat plotting and great pacing. I think there are also parallels with Becky Albertalli's work, though I think I like Oseman slightly more. Certainly both excel at writing queer romance (and romance-adjacent) stuff with happy endings (#OwnVoices wins again with all three authors).
In any case, Oseman is excellent and if you're not up for reading a novel, Heartstopper is a graphic novel series that's easy to jump into and very kind to its adorable main characters.
I think I've now decided to continue to 30, which is a relief, so I'm tagging this (and the next post that rounds out 20) two ways.

My wife runs linux, but she keeps a windows 10 VM around for exactly one thing: MS Office 2016. She needs it to ensure that grants from her lab sent to governments are formatted exactly right, something that libreoffice unfortunately still doesn't get right.
But man, even windows 10 has so much absolute garbage running in the background. It's probably time for a windows reinstall, or to see if wine will run it successfully (or something like linoffice:

To digital natives, Microsoft's IT stack makes Google's look like a model of sanity. A millennial does battle with Redmond's enterprise tools and comes away reeling.
[…] Probably the single most common argument against switching to Linux is the absolute non-negotiable requirement of many organizations to have Microsoft Exchange. […]

There was a time in the not-so-distant past when we could have avoided incredible harm to incredible numbers of people here in the US simply by giving the absolute stink eye to people spouting deranged fascist crap, by saying “ugh, wtf, get out of here” instead of finding ways to describe fascism politely enough to give it equal time in the news.
I don’t know what’s coming. I hope for the best; I fear the worst. But shunning and shaming sound so, so, so much better than even the best-case scenarios that follow from here.

My hand is holding up a classic vinyl record album: "Time Out" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Columbia Records 1959 stereo release (catalog number CS 8192), one of the most celebrated jazz albums of all time and one of the first jazz albums to sell over a million copies. It features the classic lineup of the quartet: Dave Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, Joe Morello on drums, and Eugene Wright on bass. The track listing visible includes "Strange Meadow Lark," "Three to Get Ready,…

One thing we keep getting wrong: Privacy is a *human* right. Not a corporate right. Not a government right.
Corporations and governments, tools that – in theory at least – exist to serve the people, must be transparent and accountable.
Instead, today, we have the opposite: We give corporations and governments privacy and expect absolute transparency from everyday people. That’s broth for fascism.

#DearLazyWeb: Hey #Nederlanders ik heb en expat vrag over mijn #VvE. Our management company is absolute garbage. Our VVE management company recently scheduled repainting, during winter, with the most incompetent company possible, who did a horrible job, some of which didn't need to be done. Our windows had just been repainted since they were painted before we moved in, so 1/3 of the work they did was unnecessary, and now they look much worse than they did before. I could go on, but generally lots and lots of complaints along with absolutely terrible service.
Our upstairs neighbor (also an owner) also hates them and wants to switch, but a rental company owns the top half of the building and seems to be trying to force us in to staying. Basically, this management company is super cheap and the rental company are absolutely trash absentee leaches. (They *may* also have not been paying their part of the VvE fees for a while, but I'm not totally sure I understood everything.)
Unfortunately, I am way out of my depth and can't seem to get much help from google. Can anyone give me some advice about what to read or who to talk to, or are we actually stuck?

Our realities are constantly diverging, and never completely shared. And we •want• that! It’s important for people to bring different experiences, different ways of seeing and thinking.
One person understands climate science. Another person understands the subculture of Southern Iowa. A third person knows what it’s like to live as a Black person in this society — and so on, to infinity. All these perspectives matter, and nobody gets to hold all infinity of them at once.
Nobody gets to be in full possession of absolute truth.

Do you recall the good old days, back when the worst embarrassment you could witness was someone booting up a laptop in a train, and being greeted by the Windows startup chime?
Nowadays we have to suffer a whole spectrum, from the embarrassment of people taking photos with their "shutter" sound enabled and hitting random advertisements on full volume, to the absolute rudeness of watching random stuff or playing music on their speaker.
Not to mention all the annoying, loud ringtones and notification sounds, repeated far too often. Or people who don't want to pick up their phone, but they won't bother silencing it either.

Much as white southerners acted like the election of a black man as mayor would be the death of the city as they had long known it,
white New Yorkers are now acting like the election of Mamdani will be the death of NYC.
Some of it is religious bigotry,
some of it is class panic,
but all of it is as unfounded as the reaction to the first black mayors a half century ago.

Now, for any person with a shred of moral dignity, there's some time during US history where you would have to admit that an insurrection or rebellion was necessary. Only complete scum bag fascists would try to argue that a slave revolt wasn't an absolute good, and that it was a bad thing when those revolts were crushed. Anyone with a shred of moral decency has to admit that there is at least one point in US history where the nation was doing something so incredibly evil, that it would have been good if people would have rose up and stopped it.
Today we're talking about the displacement and genocide of people in Gaza. We can look at any number of genocide on US soil carried out by the US government. Who, with any moral clarity, wouldn't point to those and want to believe that they would have resisted, violently if necessary, against those slaughters. Who, that today condemns slavery, could look at John Brown and not wish to have the moral integrity to fight and die along side of him?
Every liberal who actually believes in justice, who isn't just virtue signaling out of guilt, should be able to point to a time in history where they would absolutely agree with the most militant resistance. For those folks, I always wonder, when did that evil end? Where is your line? Have you thought about that?

The Trump administration has vowed to crack down on what it calls hate speech. It has labeled antifa, a loosely organized anti-fascist group, a terrorist organization.
And it has sought to punish figures such as TV host Jimmy Kimmel for statements perceived critical of conservative activists.
What the First Amendment makes clear is that it does not just protect the rights of speakers who say things with which Americans agree.
Or, as the Supreme Court said in a separate deci…

European "socialism" is a compromise wherein the population gets services and, in exchange, the rich are allowed to continue to exist. This compromise developed to save capitalism from the threat of the working class just rising up and just doing it all themselves. Revolutions, it turns out, can be dangerous and may be subverted. It's generally safer, so Europe's working class decided, to accept some exploitation in exchange for not taking that chance.
The the strategy of "point guns at everyone until they comply" was a sustainable strategy, all of Europe would still be absolute monarchies, feudalism would still be the dominant economic system globally, and England would still control most of the land on Earth. Recognizing that this *isn't* the state of the world should give some clues as to how well Yarvin's ideas continue will play out in the real world.
