Weekly news round-up from Saigon:
Nix-shell (for me, as a desktop user) is a powerful tool to, temporarily, enable software I wouldn't otherwise use. And that someone took the trouble to package filen-desktop as a nix package is amazing.
The Intel wifi drivers work ootb on FreeBSD 14.3, which makes it possible for me to install Ungoogled Chromium later on (as a pkg it is only available on stable releases) I got an error after compiling for 4 hrs on an i7 with 16gb, so there'…

The MacBookPro disaster is complete, more or less.
The problem: after installing macos 26.0.1 the MBP failed to reboot successfully. It kept going to the apple logo and the progress bar stopped, and eventually the mac went to Recovery Mode.
Tried:
1. re-install macos Tahoe - no luck.
2. reset NVRAM
3. reset SMC
4. re-install from Time Machine backup on NAS. Took 44 hours.

What total garbage... But of course simply putting "Microsoft" and "Mail" together always means garbage is involved.
One of the huge mistakes in the evolution of the Internet was the conflation of identities that serve distinct functions. E.g. there's no reason for the string that one uses for logging into an email account to have even the form of an email address.
The conflation of identities is why & how we have phishing.

The IF-C01COMG card came in and it works perfectly. I'll put it through its paces after work, but for now the picture is great. Easy to install and worth every penny.

Happy Birthday, Linux!
🎁🎂🎈 🥳
I first installed Linux on my computer many months after that announcement, in December 1992. I have memories of swapping an almost endless pack of floppy disks during the lengthy install at a Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Germany. The album “Connected” by Stereo MC's was playing several times until I was finally greeted with a shell prompt.

Post to the comp.os.minix newsgroup on August 25 1991 by Linus Torvalds:

Hello everybody out there using minix -

I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

I've currently ported…
