Grade beim #Frostpendeln-Kilometer-Eintragen bemerkt, daß ich gestern mit dem #mdRnH die 600km seit 1. Nov. überschritten habe. 🎉

On a more positive note, my home now features a #vacuum robot running the open source #Valetudo cloud replacement. The guide on how to do that was surprisingly easy to follow. Some light soldering, a bit of flashing that's pretty similar to rooting an Android device, and it's done.
And becau…

A black PCB roughly the size of a USB stick with pin headers, a button, a jumper header, and a micro-USB and USB-A socket. Next to it, a smaller PCB that provides a 90º breakout for the pins for robots that have their debug port mounted in a less accessible location.

The PCB layout is available on GitHub at https://github.com/Hypfer/valetudo-dreameadapter/tree/master/pcbs/dreamebreakout.
A screenshot of the Valetudo web interface; the left shows a map of the apartment with rooms in different colors. It is heavily blurred, because you all don't need the floor plan of where I live. The right side shows controls for the robots to set operation mode, fan and water use, issue commands to the dock and show statistics for the last run.

The European Union on Friday
indefinitely froze Russia’s assets in Europe
to ensure that Hungary and Slovakia,
both with Moscow-friendly governments,
can’t prevent the billions of euros from being used to support Ukraine.
Using a special procedure meant for economic emergencies,
the EU blocked the assets until Russia gives up its war on Ukraine
and compensates its neighbor for the heavy damage that it has inflicted for almost four years.
EU Cou…

«New security flaw found in Microsoft Notepad courtesy of its latest “innovative” additions»
Exactly in such places there should be no code errors. Markdown in text editor really shouldn't be the problem. But now Microsoft is showing us how AI coding (not) works and how error-prone it is.
P.S. I use Vim for the markdown, text & code files.

The 2025 Web Almanac mistook me.
I did *not* say LLMs provide better image descriptions. I cited SeeingAI and Be My Eyes as tools for undescribed IRL uses.
I said LLM-generated captions could be better than craptions. I mentioned abstracts / reading-level changes, which could be summaries?
But “better” image descriptions is right out.

Adrian Roselli acknowledges that recent advances in computer vision and LLMs have brought real benefits, such as better image descriptions and improved captions and summaries. However, he argues these tools still lack context and authorship. They can’t know why content was created, what a joke or meme depends on, or how an interface is meant to work. Their descriptions and code suggestions can easily miss the point or mislead users.

A citizen of Rome in 117 AD,
under Emperor Trajan,
would've found it difficult to imagine the empire not existing.
The roads, the aqueducts, the legal system, the trade networks stretching from Britain to Mesopotamia:
all of it seemed to be a near-fact of nature, like gravity
Edward Gibbon gave us six volumes explaining how that feeling turned out to be wrong,
and even he couldn't fully untangle all the causes.
But the overarching theme mig…

Comic: Santa's Cookies
— by comicss.art
What is delicious on the website and what is not is explained in an understandable way by Santa Clous for everyone.
🎅 #santa

cartoon with two panels showing Santa Claus holding a cookie. In the first panel he looks happy and says 'This is how a web developer gets into the nice list!' and the code on the cookie is CSS: '#Santa .cookie { scale: 1.5 }'. In tthe second panel he looks angry and says '...And this is how they end in the naughty list!!' The cookie has some JS code: document.cookie = session_token=secretvalue;path=/

Noot Noot!
