One Navy secretary and his allies in Congress fought to build more littoral combat ships even as they broke down at sea and their weapons systems failed. The Navy wound up with more ships than it wanted, at an estimated lifetime cost that could reach $100 billion or more.
The Navy’s haste to deliver ships took precedence over combat ability. Without functioning weapons systems the vessels are like a “box floating in the ocean,” one former officer said.
Sailors and officers complain…

Getting ready to tear down the current LATENTRED prototyping setup. I'm at the point that it makes sense to not do much future development until I get the final switch engine board back from fab.
Which i haven't ordered, because I haven't had a chance to finish the last few SI simulations and do signoff review.
But it's getting in the way of other projects (including work related things) competing for the same 3 square feet of bench space so I'm gonna have to …

Managers were starting to understand that velocity on its own has no value. But then along came #AI and said "but what if we made that velocity 10x?" and they fell for it all over again - because they only have a surface level understanding of the work.
The logic of the feature factory has permitted #genAI

It's not hyperbole to say that what we in the Fediverse are doing to build decentralized social media is important for the future of liberal democracy.

"Thats not to say there haven’t been growing pains. When a great steak comes out of the microwave I get really excited. But more than half the steaks that come out of the microwave get sent back by the customer. To solve this problem I now run ten microwaves in parallel cooking ten steaks. One out of the ten steaks will most likely be good. The number of microwaves has required me to upgrade my restaurant’s electrical system and I now have a small nuclear reactor installed in the parkin…

The account at troet.cafe/@m7moodfamily (@m7moodfamily@troet.cafe) is a scam. It’s got hundreds of posts even though it joined yesterday and it links to gaza-verified.org even though we have not verified it.
I’m also seeing copies of the account on troet.cafe and elsewhere. Be careful with any a…

Up close, the aging visages of the moai are riddled with signs of erosion and staining.
They are gradually wearing away to dust.
Tuki, who works in Rapa Nui's tourism industry, is essentially watching these stunning figures slowly disappear.
"My father told me that the moai would go back into the ocean one day," she says.
Tuki's father, who died in 2020, was a famed contemporary moai sculptor.
The original statues, mostly carved between 110…

"Breaching the target would ramp up the extreme weather already devastating communities around the world. It would also require carbon dioxide to be sucked from the atmosphere in future to restore the stable climate in which the whole of civilisation developed over the past 10,000 years."
This is bogus. Carbon-neutral #CarbonCaptureAndStorage is the modern perpetual…

I've been thinking back and forth for a few days now about whether to stick with Linux Mint or bite the moral bullet and switch back to Fedora.
And the winner is..... (drum roll): Linux Mint!
All in all, the more justifiable decision for me. I was able to eliminate a few minor problems, for example by connecting the printer via USB instead of just via WLAN. This means that printouts are made immediately and not minutes later. These “ghost fractals” on the desktop have also st…
