We've been visited by a humming bird hawk moth, aka bee moth. Its a moth, not a bird, but it feeds by hovering while sipping nectar from deep-throated flowers, like a humming bird.
I managed to get these pictures. I'll try to get some more over the weekend.

Last week one of my milkweeds was covered with several large, healthy-looking, Monarch caterpillars.
The caterpillars ate all of the leaves, thus leaving them hungry and quite visible to the many birds in our area.
The birds ate all of the Monarch caterpillars.
We have about a half dozen milkweeds - mostly the California native types - around the house. I will plant more, especially the type that was devoured by the caterpillars, but I will cover them with bird netting.

Why does the porridge bird lay its eggs in the air?
ChatGPT said:

The phrase "Why does the porridge bird lay its eggs in the air?" is a surreal, nonsensical question, famously used by comedian George Carlin in his routines to highlight how language and logic can be twisted into absurdity.

It doesn’t have a literal meaning—the "porridge bird" is not a real creature, and laying eggs in the air defies biology and physics. The question is an example of absurdist humor—intended to make you pause, …

Good morning from Harlem
#Photography #GoodMorning #Sunrise #NYC

Looking through an arched window two-and-a-half hours after sunrise the sky is full of grey rain clouds. Pointed roofs of Harlem brownstones with red brickwork are across the street, and a taller apartment building can be seen in the distance. The green tops of two trees are on the bottom and right. A bird is flying by, just a speck in the top of the sky.

Last night J came across a hedgehog by the covered grid. I stood and watched it whilst she went to get water and some food.
I looked up into the kitchen and looked back and the hedgehog was gone.
I doubt it was needing food, they've taken from the bird food on the ground feeders in the past. It was more the water we were concerned about.

Florida’s Everglades National Park is often referred to as the most endangered national park in the United States.
In 1968, developers tried to construct the largest airport in the world in the middle of the park,
which was already suffering from a multitude of environmental crises:
disrupted water flow, a drastic decline in the bird population, human development, invasion of exotic species, and the endangerment of the Florida panther.
After an upswell of public outcry…

One of the young starlings, now quite independent.

Young starling standing on the upper box of a wooden bird feeder. Photograph taken from behind.

The head of a wood pigeon behind that's standing on the lower box.

The background is the corner of the garden in shades of green. The back of the garden faces the south west and is lit by the morning sun coming over the house.

My project that I completed yesterday. An old patio umbrella base, a fence post from a big box store, two old wall brackets for flower baskets, a couple of bird feeders that were on sale at CanTire, and a repurposed squirrel baffle. About $100 in total cost, not including the black oil seed. It's positioned right outside our sunroom for bifd watching, by us and our cat Casper.
