"Sir Keir’s reshuffle looks less like renewal than a coup by Labour’s “modernising” clique. Ian Murray’s sacking severs a bridge to Anas Sarwar’s Scottish Labour, which had been tacking leftwards, just as the Holyrood election looms, while Lucy Powell’s removal sidelines one of the few cabinet allies of Ed Miliband, the soft left’s champion" -- in other words, Labour is tacking even more violently towards the dark side.

Time for another "review". This one's hard. While the book was quite interesting, it required me to be quite open-minded. Still, I think it's worth mentioning:
Robert Wright — Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny
The book basically focused on a thesis that both biological evolution and cultural evolution are a thing, they are directional and this directionality can be explained together using game theory — as eventually leading to more non-zero sum games.
It consists of three chapters. The first one is is focused on the history of civilization. It features many examples from different parts of the world, which makes it quite interesting. The author argues that the culture inevitably is evolving as information processing techniques improve — from writing to the Internet.
The second chapter is focused on biological evolution. Now, the argument is that it's not quite random, but actually directed towards greater complexity — eventually leading to the development of highly intelligent species, and a civilization.
The third chapter is quite speculative and metaphysical, and I'm just going to skip it.
The book is full of optimism. Capitalism creates freedom — because people are more productive when they're working for their own gain, so the free market eliminates slavery. Globalisation creates networks of interdependence that make wars uneconomic. Increased contacts between different cultures makes people more tolerant. And eventually, the humanity may be able to unite facing a common "external" enemy — the climate change.
What can I say? The examples are quite interesting, the whole theory seems self-consistent. Still, I repeatedly looked at the publication date (it's 1999), and wondered if author would write the same thing today (yes, I know I can search for his current opinions).

This way of thinking of hierarchical control rejects the notion of control hierarchies as the arbitrary top-down dictates of rulers and other public officials. For that reason, examining the use of raw, top-down political power to coerce and control individuals or groups is beyond the purview of this chapter. Although this is a real and serious threat to humankind that requires addressing and correcting, it is best understood as the exercise of force, not of constraints as understood here.

Good Morning #Canada
I have one final chapter for The Dirt on Canadian Farming, and it's more of an opinion piece.
As I conducted research on each province for information on their agriculture, there were numerous news stories about how farmers and farm organizations were fighting against loss of farmland. Urban growth, new housing development, and sprawling industrial parks are gobbling up prime farmland. The attached article is just one example. The statistics released by each province have common trends:the average age of farmers increasing, individual farm operators in decline, larger farms are increasing, renting of farmland is growing, and overall arable land is in decline. With the sparsely populated prairies holding the majority of fertile farmland, Canada likely won't lose our global impact because of development for houses or industry. But elsewhere, our food chain will be pushed further away from where we live. Or disappear.

Chapter One: Another Day, Another Problem
Perry Hotter had finished his Spoonerism Class for the day and was passing through the Great Hall toward the dormitories when he heard a familiar shout:
"Perry Hotter! What have you done with the bat guano?"
It was Eudora McChronicle, the journalism and creative writing professor. She was, as always, somewhat miffed about something.
"The guano? I added it to the cow dung."
"Bullshit!," she cried, "that wasn't cow dung; that was the final draft of a senior student's thesis!"
"Well," Perry stammered, "you can see how I could make the mistake."
"Indeed I do," the professor said, instantly calming. "Now, how do you propose to remedy the situation?"
"I suppose," Perry guessed, "I could use it as a prompt in Hogwash's Large Language Model. I think the output would be bullshit again."
"Precisely, Mr. Hotter. Now, off you go, and mind what you do with the next pile of crap you come across."

Silly, nonsensical (like what I remember of the first 2 games, which I played on my flatmate’s PS3 in university, approximately 17 billion years ago), but entertaining. I currently read “It can’t happen here” by Sinclair Lewis from 1935. It's about fictive events in the US in 1936: an election won by a senator turned dictator. It reads like a description of the US 2024/2025, except dear leader is Democrat, not Republican. I'm on page 90 (just finished chapter 11), almost 300 more to read, it really is hard!
As the Trump playbook follows Project 2025, are we completely sure that this is NOT just a rewrite of Lewis' novel?

Glad that someone informed me that my side project busrouter.sg is featured on CNA Insider's Singapore Hour "The Unseen Side of Singapore’s Bus System", under the chapter "Woodlands Bus Depot: The Eyes and Ears of Singapore’s Bus System" (04:08)

A person monitors a digital map displaying bus routes and stops on a computer screen at a bus operations control centre.
A person pointing at a computer screen displaying a bus route map with the subtitle "You mean the road isn’t passable?" at the bottom.
Map with location names and route lines displayed on a screen, with subtitles reading, "As the bus captain waits at the scene,".
Map on a screen showing a route with bus stops marked, and a subtitle at the bottom reading "The road isn’t passable for Service 973,".
