Built the physicality of a character with an #acting #coaching client. And, unsurprisingly, found a couple new ways lines could go for their version of them. Always good to see concrete decisions start to animate and infuse things with new specifics.
@… "Can emojis be removed from Unicode? Or are they there forever once they are in?" - As of now, once they're in, they're in. The code point in Unicode is then reserved for this symbol. This can be a problem because emojis are kind of open-ended (other than alphabets and many other symbol lists). And it's possible that some emojis turn out to be rarely used. I could imagine that eventually some platforms just stop supporting a certain emoji - but it's really useful to have an international encoding standard which is fully supported by most technology (as anyone who has programmed or written online text in the early 2000s can attest). That's why getting a new emoji approved has become so hard - we're basically creating a kind of tech debt for a potentially long time.
Funny story - you could try creating a post now with a Unicode character from an "empty" code point in the emoji range, in the hope that it will get assigned in a later round. I've seen such a post on the old Twitter, which later was filled with all kinds of random emojis, when you look at it in a few years. #linguistics #emojis #WorldEmojiDay

More Valheim today. Will we make actual progress, or will I spend the next three hours accidentally flattening my own character with a rogue birch tree? There’s only one way to find out. Live now! https://www.twitch.tv/tuxramus
Actually, should the plural be "emoji" or "emojis" ?? 😵💫 - Both are used frequently! I think "emoji" reminds us of other loan words that end in "-i" in the plural, like "celli" or "radii" or "tori" or all the pastas. That's why many people feel that "emoji" is plural enough 😅 . But the word is from Japanese, and is called "emoji" in the singular, from "e" = picture and "moji" = character. (In contrast to "emot-icon", the word "emoji" doesn't have anything to do with emotion!) So my vote is for the regular English plural "-s", yielding "emojis" ✅ #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

Narrative Keyframing for Generative Creative Writing
Chao Zhang, Abe Davis

arXiv:2608.10337v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: We introduce narrative keyframing, an interaction technique for AI-assisted creative writing that lets writers specify different types of narrative constraints at selected moments in a story, then use AI to generate intervening prose. Inspired by the use of keyframing in animation, narrative keyframing offers a flexible way to connect story planning with adaptive control over generated text. We explore three types of keyframes: plot keyframes define significant events in a story, character keyframes represent how individual characters change over the narrative, and perspective keyframes capture how individual characters experience different events through first-person narratives. Plot and character keyframes offer a flexible way to adapt the type of high-level conditioning explored in previous AI writing tools to more customizable, iterative, and fine-scale control, while perspective keyframes add a new way to control characterization and focalization by using first-person narratives as an intermediary. Through a user study, we show that narrative keyframing supports a more controllable, transparent, and engaging way to use generative AI in creative writing.

Watched "Mythic Quest" which is four series of ten episodes of a sit com about a fictional video game studio on Apple TV.
I have previously said Apple are great at Sci Fi but have nothing remotely funny, but Mythic Quest is all right*. I laughed one or two times an episode at least.
Used to work in the game biz and it does show the character of that work surprisingly well.
"Always Sunny In Philadelphia"'s Charlie Day is involved in production and Rob McElhenney from that show one of the two main stars.
Does feel a bit like that show, the way the dialog from the actors is so often teasing verging on spiteful.
*, yeah okay Ted Lasso is alright as well. New womens-game series of that, after a long absence, is going okay too.

@… I am personally able to set that aside and enjoy the show, but I do agree that it’s an annoying property of shows that set themselves up to have a reveal eventually.
I remember watching How I Met Your Mother in my youth, and the whole thing hinges on eventually revealing who “your mother” is… and then it’s just some random character they insert in the last …

I have an idea about making a #ttrpg campaign in a historical way where players keep the same character more of less as normal but at every session they play the descendant of the last character a few generation later.
Just finished "Snake-Eater" by T. Kingfisher (@…). I'd read and thoroughly enjoyed her "Digger" webcomic, and found this book to be quite enjoyable too. There's something indelibly heartwarming about an anxious character growing to feel more comfortable and self-assured, especially when escaping and unlearning emotional abuse, and I'm certainly a sucker for heartwarming characters. I like the way that Kingfisher has taken time to talk about and try to avoid cultural appropriation, in a way that I feel is reasonable, although of course I'm not an expert judge of the nuances and I'm biased by having liked the book, so I'm willing to be told things are complicated in that regard it others judge differently. I also really liked the window dressing of a vaguely solarpunk future society, in a book that's not at all about that society. I'd love to see Kingfisher write something focused on how that society could work (or maybe she already has?).
Probably going to look up some of Kingfisher's fantasy books soon.

Walking through the beats of a scene with an #acting #coaching client, and they came up with a goal for their character at the end of the scene that I hadn't even considered before, and it really worked as a strong, new option. Always cool finding new things.
Running a scene with an #acting #coaching client, and found a moment where their character's view of the other character changes. We then added an understanding, that alloyed with the realization, and found a new dimension to it. Good to see.
Had an #acting #coaching client do one line from the scene five times in a row (with direction), and the character grew from each, got enriched. Very next take of the scene: new flashes of fire in their character's eyes, real, vital and great to see.
This is the game I've been playing on the Deck. Works pretty great on there. It's super lofi graphics, but great loot and stash system, battle, buffs, it's a decent roguelike. When a game hooks me, it hooks me. And just a couple bucks. You die a lot! And lose everything, of course. Great bite sized runs.

Gave a direction to an #acting #coaching client for them to get the other character to do something very specific for them, and the following take opened up in new very interactive ways. Cool seeing a new layer get discovered. Specific almost always beats vague.

With an #acting #coaching client we discovered underlying sadness in the scene on one rehearsal. So had them play opposite: envision a joyful future for the character, and go again. We saw a matter-of-fact optimism wrap around that sadness in a really cool counterpoint.
Started working with an #acting #coaching client on making quick acting choices well. In about 15 minutes we got a sequence to poignance such that I really wanted to see what happens to the character next and wanted to help them. So good to see quick work land.
"I want to establish a wide range and play all kinds of parts. It's that sort of acting career I really respect. I like to turn a sharp left from whatever I've done before because that keeps me awake. That's why I want to be an actor - I don't want to play endless variations on one character."
—Tim Curry
#acting
Gave an #acting #coaching client a very specific, even narrow note for a next take, and they brought a specificity to how they were entreating the other character that was new, and cool. Almost always: specific is more fun and interesting than vague.
Directed an #Acting #Coaching client to choose the level of their character's mental illness for a take and we'd see if I could tell what they chose. To my surprise and joy, the impact on the final moments of the scene was terrifyingly new, and fascinating to discover.
An #acting #coaching client used the emotional/physical reality of their own day as a starting point for their character, and it was so interesting and fun. I'm a big fan of starting with what you have, and where you are, and letting that be some great raw material.

Worked with #acting #coaching client on new material. 3rd run thru: a single change, they started to connect to the root of the character, and I could see what props would support their work in a final production, like they were there. Cool reality distortion field.
Had an #acting #coaching client make a single physical change be the focus of a take and shot to see and hear their voice expand into the character in a whole new way. So good to hear their voice more fully animate the moments with new depths.
