Starmer’s digital ID plan is in meltdown.
The public are against it, and companies like Palantir see rumours of their involvement as a reputational risk.
Unusual for a CEO [note his last name] to disavow the project on ethical and democratic grounds. Quite an interview.

Note to Web builders: One of the tiny things I did while wiring Pagefind into the blog was arrange, when you pop open the search field, that that the input has focus so you can start typing. There are plenty of sites I visit where the obvious thing you want to do is type into a search field, but you have to click first, which is just wrong. It’s not hard with basic JavaScript and you don’t need jQuery or anything.
@… it seems on iOS 26.1 public beta videos often don’t seem to play. I see the preview in the timeline but when I click and open them, they stop playing, and they never load no matter what I do. Is that a known bug.

Why does all #software insist on being your buddy these days?
Can we go back to the old days where instead of trying to slide into your DMs, and be your best frend, software was a recalcitrant old hag in a back alley who spat out an obscure error code that at least when you looked it up in a knowledge base told you exactly what you had done wrong and what, if anything, you could do about it? This…
When I was little, I felt there was something massive and cosmic about the Hampster Dance song, like a hymn still sung centuries later, like the seasonal chants of an uncontacted tribe. My first exposure to it was its use in the Scratch platformer series "Cube World", this game where important characters go to space and tragically die, this game that no longer functions due to all the updates since Scratch 1.4.

Love it when companies make constant changes to their app so any form of muscle memory you may have had before when clicking something makes you click the wrong thing, again and again, sending you off to some new, weird area of the app they're trying to force in front of your eyeballs.
Thank you for that, companies. How else would I stay annoyed and on my toes

After getting her set up on namecheap, I was asking her what kind of website she was going to have, and she showed me a local competing NGO's site. From my LinkedIn post: “Telling your dev team to use AI coding tools is like telling your 2010 ops team to use AWS. They didn’t know how to code, they were ticket and click-it VMware people… developers who don’t have product management mindset or have never managed a dev team will fail by trying to micromanage the output of the tool rather than specifying the outcome of the product and managing the agent team to deliver that outcome.”
I am going to keep whining about this for web sites. If you show ALL products then the default for the checklist is ALL items to be marked, not like the example. Second is STOP REFRESHING EVERY TIME I CLICK. Have a nice button that says 'REFRESH'.
Why? I want to see every maker EXCEPT HP! I should not have to click 6 options and wait for a refresh for each one.

The Internet has ruined headlines.
It used to be that headlines had names. Now they carefully DO NOT on purpose, because using a generic role description is more likely to get a click-through to see who it is. The problem has bled into ledes as well, which are no longer synopses of stories but rather secondary teasers. You may be a few paragraphs into a story before you can get the information that every Journo 101 teacher would have demanded be in the first 3 lines.

My least favourite and most infuriating app experience?
Having a page load, see a button I want to click, right before I click the button, the app loads in more bits of information or another button and knocks the one I wanted to press to a different location, thus having me click the wrong one.
New tip for showing students how to express a Windows file location in a text format (e.g., for Stata, R, Python, Julia to read/write):
Find the folder in the File Explorer, right click on it, and click "Open in Command Window".
The prompt shows the location. All they need to do then is replace the stupid backslashes.
I think this is new in W11.
