There is both where you draw a line on spectrum and how you judge people on either side of the line.
If where you draw the line is much stricter then where other draw it then folks who do better then average but worse then what you expect become a group of people you have to make a decision about.
do you treat them the same as those who are below everyone's line? Or do you address them separately?

"is there (still) a lot of use of "signage" emojis like 🏪 or even more abstract 🛅?" - These complex ones are not so frequently used. BUT emojis are often used for signs in real life (= meat world, not digitally). I have a huge collection of photos I put together with the help of students. I think emojis are particularly good for this because such signs are often about rules, what we're not allowed to do or supposed to do. And emojis "soften" this face-threat (being told what to do) a bit, by being cute and colorful and generally perceived as positive. #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

Do young and old people interpret (or use) emojis differently? - Yes, to some extent. Actually with most emojis we see a huge overlap in interpretation and also use. But there are some frequent emojis which are, on average, interpreted differently by older and younger people in our studies. For example, the slighly smiling face 🙂 and its upside down variant 🙃 are seen as more positive by older participants, while the little dot-eyes are seen as cold and not authentic ("psychopath eyes") by younger people. Similarly, the winking smiley 😉 is used by the older group to mark any jokes or fun (similarly to the original ;-) emoticon), and younger people find it often completely inappropriate and sexually suggestive #emojis #WorldEmojiDay #linguistics

"Do you know of any unexpected pattern of emoji usage? For example I'd expect younger folks to use emoji more than older folks and private communication to use it more than business... But maybe my assumptions are wrong or there is something else interesting?" - Yes generally our studies show that younger ppl use emojis more than older (and women a bit more than men). But in class with my undergraduates, they recently often tell me "I don't use emojis at all". I must say I don't fully believe them (maybe they don't even notice all the little hearts anymore?) and I haven't been able to show this in studies, but it's an interesting anecdotal data point I'd like to know more about!
Also, a student of mine recently asked teenagers (13 and 16yos) about their emoji interpretations. And surprisingly to us, these almost entirely match the data we already have for adults. Even for some like 🙃 and 😉 that I thought were changing (and just told you that younger people see them differently 😬). So that was a bit weird to me 😅 #emojis #WorldEmojiDay #linguistics

🤔 Are #emojis a universal language? - No, for two reasons. 1) They are not a language, as they do not show the properties that human languages have: grammatical structure and free combinatorics, enabling us to express complex thoughts. 2) They are not really universal. While many emojis are interpreted similarly all over the world (I guess it's pretty clear what one could mean by 🍕 ), some emoji meanings are closely tied to cultural assumptions (e.g., some of the gestures 👍 , buildings ⛩️ , food), and others are very context-dependent and might follow different conventions in various groups, including linguistic or regional groups (e.g., 🙃 for which we found strong differences between populations in Norway/US vs. Germany/Bulgaria). #WorldEmojiDay #linguistics

Por causa do frio, os gatos ficam completamente grudados em mim durante a noite. Então eu dormi todo torto na cama e agora estou com dor nas costas.

Trump used his address to call out ABC and NBC
for not airing his live remarks,
claiming the networks declined to do so
“because they know how corrupt our system is and they don’t want to reveal it.”
He also repeated his frequent demand that the networks’ government-issued broadcast licenses be revoked.
“They and others in the media are part of a plot,”
the president said, offering no evidence for his claims.
In fact, ABC and NBC did carry Trump’s spe…

Almost everyone involved in the federal and Kentucky governments and press has a device, in their hand or in their pocket, capable of video chatting from wherever they are to almost anyone else in government and press.
And not one can make a video call and point the device at the “living” Senator?
How the f*ck gullible do people think everyone is?!
I mean, the gop should at _least_ fake a video call. Come on now. I demand better fraud from the gop.

There is absolutely no legitimate, or appropriate path, for this writ.
Doesn't mean this batch of dishonest hacks won't do it.

Worked with an #acting #coaching client on a brand new (to us) piece of text, and learning who the character was even on the ice cold reading (never read before) was inspiring. Some roles are clear instantly from the start, some require we do more homework to start finding them.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used an anti-LGBTQ slur completely unprompted at an Iowa State Fair on Monday,
referring to transgender people as “trannies.”
“At the Department of War, we do training, not trannies,”
he said at a Salute to the Troops military fundraiser at the fair, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reported.
The event was initially supposed to be in March, but was delayed when two Iowa service members were killed in an Iranian airstrike that Hegseth downplayed…

Mullin threatens states that refuse Trump's election demands
Mullin also repeated his threat of withholding Federal Emergency Management Agency grant funding to states that don’t work to “secure” elections.
“If they’re not willing to do it, it should raise serious questions.
It’s not that hard. This isn’t a partisan issue,”
the homeland security secretary said.
This also comes after the Trump justice department sent letters to election officials in every sta…

A White House post targeted Kristen Holmes, a senior White House correspondent for CNN,
after she asked Donald Trump to respond to a widely shared comment by Democratic senator Jon Ossoff in a speech on Sunday.
The Georgia senator told a crowd that Trump “doesn’t want to do the job”
and instead “wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar”.
The comment was an apparent reference to Natali…

The Trump administration has said it will drastically shorten visas for foreign journalists in the US
to 240 days -- down from five years,
and cut those for Chinese journalists to only 90 days.
The rule announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
will do away with the “duration of status” system,
which allows foreign journalists to stay and work in the United States as long as they meet eligibility requirements.
In addition to journalists,

A new survey conducted by CNBC‘s Generation Labs asked over 1,000 US adults aged between 18 and 34 to share their thoughts on politics, AI, and the country’s economy.
A particularly interesting branch of questions polled participants on their views of nine executives overseeing AI companies, and the results were dismal.
Asked “who do you trust to act responsibly on AI?” the vast majority of participants said they “don’t trust” any of the nine figures.

The ‘MAHA Trots’ are what happens when Republicans implement their anti-government agenda.
prospect.org/2026/07/16/how-do

Senator Mitch McConnell’s handlers would like the American public to believe that he’s still physically and mentally fit to be in office,
but that no longer seems to be the case.
The longtime Kentucky Republican suddenly reappeared in Congress this week after an unexplained three-month absence,
apparently ready to vote on Senate proceedings.
But when tasked to do so during Wednesday’s Senate Agriculture Committee meeting on the Farm Bill,
McConnell hazily sided …

at least not in their current form.
But I do think that we’re living through a period of generational damage, one that will take years to repair -- if not decades. …
