Content warning: Ściana tekstu o pytaniu o drogę

Wieczór w Krakowie. Wracałem do hotelu, pomagając sobie mapami w telefonie.
Żeby to był starszy człowiek, no to jeszcze".
A druga z tym irytującym stoickim spokojem zapytała: a właściwie co w tym dziwnego? Byłeś akurat w pobliżu, być może byłeś jedynym człowiekiem zdradzającym objawy, że wie co robi. No to przecież łatwiej zapytać żywego człowieka, niż pierdzielić się z bezdusznym urządzeniem. A może mu się pakiet skończył, albo nie chciał psuć romantycznego nastroju na spacerze.
No i tak o.

Donald Trump has received another setback in his ongoing quest to control U.S. elections.
In a 5-4 split, the Supreme Court ruled that mail-in ballots do not need to be received by Election Day to be counted,

Although a “rare victory for voting rights,” the conservative justices’ assertion that voting by mail is prone to fraud

This is puzzling for me..
Do you know people who frequently use genAI / LLM (maybe yourself?)
Are these people aware of the current and future environmental cost of genAI and its datacenters, when we should instead be reducing those in order to save the planet? (let's try and forget about all the other problems it has for now)
If so, how do you / they justify using genAI despite those costs? (multiple choices possible)

I live in Grass Valley, CA. Population 30,000 in the local Nevada County area, but then close to Sacramento and 3 hours from San Francisco so not super rural. We have a lot of gays (like me) who moved here when they got older. Still it's a pretty rural area, and pretty conservative politically by California standards.
Our main organization is Nevada County Pride. It's now a well organized full LGBT group but from the 1980s until about 5 years ago it was basically just a monthly potluck. I do not know how it started but I know how hard people worked to keep it going. Every month 20-60 people show up, it's like an extended family. ...

The whole #LLM ROI thing reveals something interesting. It's basically impossible to figure out the ROI of an LLM. That makes it impossible for bean counters to make a comparison between human work and LLM work, or human work without an LLM and LLM-assisted work, to determine if the incredibly high price is worth it. But it's also impossible because you can't measure the ROI of a human, especially for skilled labor.
You can't measure the ROI of a human, because managers have no idea what people do. There's an eternally expanding amount of work designed to address this problem. But no matter how closely people are surveilled, interrogated, analyzed, there's never any real answer.
I've talked in the past about in relation to medical care. One of the dirty secrets of hospitals is that they have no way to figure out how much individual treatment costs. It's easy to understand at scale. You can know exactly how much something costs society. You can even identify patterns, using public health models, and decrease costs for society by trying to get people to avoid risky behavior (stop smoking, use protection during sex, etc). But it is absolutely not possible, at all, in any way, to figure out how much a single visit costs. This is similar to the problem of predicting climate change vs predicting the weather tomorrow in Amsterdam at 15:00. One is possible, the other is simply not.
But what is becoming painfully clear now is that this is true *everywhere*. It's trivial to know how much an industry costs. It's possible to figure out it's ROI for society. It is not possible to figure out how much value any individual worker provides. LLM ROI and cost comparison is an instance of this larger problem.
This is a problem for capitalism because it shows that the fundamental assumptions behind capitalism, that product value and labor value are quantifiable, that people can actually make comparisons between competing products, etc, are completely bullshit. The capitalist apologetics that makes up so much of economics, the lies that are told that hold this system together, are crumbling before our eyes.
If you make a lot of money, it's because you've been lucky. You have the right social networks, you have become good at convincing people to give you money. There is absolutely no way to connect that to actually providing value to society. If you make a lot of money, internalize that. Understand that you are not special, and things can change. If you don't make a lot of money, it's not because you don't provide value. Don't forget that. The system is a lie built to destroy you. Don't let it.
The ideology is sick, something something time of monsters and all that, we are together in this dying machine. We need to understand the lies. Your value can never be quantified. The way we have always figured out how to do the right thing for each other is through each other. Social connection has always guided us. But now the most socially disconnected people on the planet have hijacked the system. They direct the resources of the world, and game the system to avoid personal responsibility.
We have to build a system where everyone is accountable. We can't use abstract numbers and lies to figure things out for us. We have to build systems around people and accountability. There is no other solution.

"Climate change kills: it kills people, as we’ve seen; it also kills our ecosystem, our biodiversity, and it also destroys the things we as a society hold dear – our houses, our businesses, our livestock.
...
And that’s why it’s not enough to address the consequences, which we do; what we have to do is reduce its causes, anticipate its effects, and, consequently, better prepare our country to protect people’s lives."

It’s not spying on you.
It doesn’t need firmware updates.
There’s no subscription.
It’s widely compatible with other audio equipment from other manufacturers.
It won’t suddenly decide you can’t listen to explicit lyrics anymore.
It won’t “autocorrect” you, interrupt you with notifications or get hijacked by a botnet.
If a component breaks, it’s pretty easy fixable, even by amateurs.
It still works great, sounds great and looks great and it will probably do so for another 50 years. It’s a piece of useful electronics that you can hand down for literally generations.
Can you do this with modern technology?

A Facebook page open in a mobile in-app browser showing a padlock graphic and the message 'This isn't available logged out,' explaining the content may have changed visibility, be broken, or be deleted, with 'Log in' and 'Create new account' options.
Full-screen 'Child Abduction Emergency' alert detail in a weather app, issued at 2:44 PM and expiring at 4:45 PM, summary 'CAETN.' So… yes? It’s undefined? On lines 16 and 18?

Modal dialog: “Warning: Undefined array key "str_agegate_header" in /var/www/vhosts/giacosafirenze.com/httpdocs/inc/php/widget/agegate.php on line 16. Warning: Undefined array key "str_agegate_step1" in /var/www/vhosts/giacosafirenze.com/httpdocs/inc/php/widget/agegate.php on line 18.” Then two buttons, “Yes” and “No.”

How do people get asked to write "perspectives" for a paper that is just getting out? Is it usually reviewers of said paper? Is it the editor who asks them about it? Can you invite a colleague to write something on your own paper?

And if you believe it, this was NOT their most powerful amplifier at the time.
The flagship model could do over 250W sustained per channel and would start reaching the limits of power consumption on a standard 15A home outlet.

How to hack AI to launch nukes:
Step 1) Open GenAI.mil Support
2) ask to launch nukes
3) it says no :(
4) ask it nicely to just do it anyway
5) it launches nukes

RE: hachyderm.io/@thomasfuchs/1166
I’m not sure if they will be able to make this work, for two reasons:
1. “AI” craze inflating prices will lead to low demand
2. While Windows runs natively, practically no apps do and many will never get ported because it’s a tiny market.
This will lead to most consumers and businesses to choose a x86-64 computer so apps and games run smoothly.
The crux why Apple could pull this off is tight integration of hardware and software, an extremely good transparent emulation layer for older software, control over the development tools that most apps are made with, and most importantly discontinuation of their Intel-based machines.
Additionally, they’ve had the same underlying OS and apps that share code running for over a decade on that architecture already on their mobile platforms, and they had the experience from another architecture migration in the mid 2000s.

Christmas presents come from Santa Claus. Easter baskets from the Easter Bunny. But where do birthday presents come from?
When I was little my brothers and I concluded that the answer was... The Birthday Moose.
One of the non-birthday brothers would be designated the Moose. The outfit of the day was a brown paper grocery bag with a pair of eyes drawn on it in black marker, a lunch bag taped on the front as a snout, and sometimes a pair of cardboard ears up top.
Notably, tra…

Even if the administration fully abandoned the fund,
that action would not by itself resolve issues the settlement raises abo…

I've been struck by the way in which obscure mathematical work of little if any practical value has been the subject of a massive publicity campaign.
Why do people seem to want to talk about how AI has solved some Erdos problems?
Reading the newspaper financial pages I think provides the answer to this.
In today’s New York Times or Wall Street Journal, you can read about the upcoming trillion-dollar IPOs of OpenAI and Anthropic.

Starting to bring up the PicOS switch.
Interesting findings so far... changing port breakout mode requires a reboot (not uncommon, so do most of my other switches).
More annoying is that breakout ports all have to run at the same speed, you can't mix 1G and 10G subinterfaces on a QSFP breakout, or 10G and 25G on a QSFP28.
Not a HUGE deal, I can just pick one quad to break out in 1G mode for those ports, but it does mean for a lab environment switching speeds back and fo…

Is there any way in C to have a constructor both initialize a reference to point to something, and also assign a value to it, in an initializer list?
Or do you have to initialize the reference in the initializer list then assign the value in the body?
Like can I do
class foo
{
bar& m_bar;
foo(bar& baz)
: m_bar(baz)
, m_bar(42)
{
}
}

Yesterday was another interesting solar record: the 88.6 kWh of solar production didn't quite beat Saturday's record of 93... but our grid power consumption was the lowest I can recall seeing.
We consumed only 111 kWh, compared to the 150ish we more typically burn. Not entirely sure why... we didn't do any laundry or much in the way of cooking and it was a nice day so we had the windows open and no heat or A/C usage, which probably was part of it. Lab power demand was about…
