English Alt Text:
A city scene viewed from inside a brick tunnel with a curved ceiling. Outside, the street is lined with tall buildings, trees, and vehicles. Inside the tunnel, a person rides a bicycle away from the camera, while another sits on a concrete bollard, reading or looking at something in their hands. The ground is paved with bricks and includes a tactile strip for visually impaired pedestrians. The contrast between the shadowed tunnel and the bright city beyo…

A stone wall with a mounted sign in both Chinese and English. Above the stone wall is a brick structure, likely part of a historic city wall. The sign reads “Care for the City Wall. No Climbing” and includes a red prohibition symbol of a person climbing. A phone number is listed for inquiries. The image emphasizes preservation and safety, discouraging physical interaction with the historic structure.

Hmmmm… here is a problem I did not anticipate.
Every time I empty the main pond hole of water, (the actual hole under the liner) water returns within an hour or two. I’ve done it 4 times now, and it keeps filling back up with water.
Obviously there is water underground infiltrating into the pond hole, and/or the water table itself is above the bottom of the hole. It is not coming from either of the other holes because they both have the same amount of water in them as they did this morning.
I have “watered” the blueberry patch and hazelnut tree a lot with the water that I have been cleaning the filter with… and we also had lots of water flying around outside the liners yesterday as I tested the pump. So it is quite possible that the ground around the pond is simply well saturated.
I think I am going to have to just keep removing the water (and putting it into the sewer) until it does not refill. We have a week of hot weather coming. Surely that will be enough time for everything to dry out completely.
Otherwise I might run into some issues if the rains return before I can anchor down the pond liner with gravel and get the plumbing in!
How is time already running short!?
Never underestimate the ability of water to find a place where it is not wanted. 😆

Yard treasures. Any idea what that might have been for? Must be some old GDR gear. #project25

Photograph of a old metal frame with some decks and a step. Can't really tell whether it's some sort of bench or ladder. The decking on the top is very weathered and brittle already. The metal tube frame is slightly rusty but looks OK otherwise.

We hoofed it up Mill Mountain before the heat ~really~ set in. The humidity did not wait, unfortunately, but we enjoyed it all the same.
We are now decamped in a coffee shop and pondering lunch options. I think we’re off to a bistro and bakery we’ve heard great things about. Their Better Than Sex cake is reputed to be true to its name.

A sweeping view from partway up Mill Mountain, looking out across downtown Roanoke. Green hills comprise the foreground, covered by a blue sky with scattered clouds. Distant mountains form the northwestern edge of the valley.
A large, weathered metal star structure stands against a blue sky with clouds, partially obscured by trees. At night, the star is lit in red and white neon lights and can be seen all throughout the valley.
A Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar. It is a large, dark caterpillar with orange spines is on a textured, reddish-brown surface. Its body is segmented, and it has long antennae.
The view from the observation deck at the top of Mill Mountain. Roanoke sits below in the bowl of the valley.

Another tree planted this year that no one watered so it died. I don’t know why it isn’t a bigger scandal Public Works let dozens of street trees die through inaction after their contractor went bankrupt. Only one Chron article mentioned it and only from the angle of “nonprofit shuts down.”

Street tree with brown leaves and drooping branches. It is obviously dead
