I'm gonna bump this one on my main since I've got a lot more followers here. This is all stuff I've said in different ways before.
"Replacing humans" is always the dream of capitalists. But you can't. Even if *all* of this was solved, even if we could somehow do so many impossible things, we're still left with *a system made of people.*
You can't remove people from a system made of people. It's meat and bones all the way down. Capitalism only works on paper. Its assumptions fall apart the second it faces the real world, and we're left with the reality of authoritarianism under another name. But it's not just awful and oppressive, it's flailing and foolish.

I went to return two library books this morning and collect one, and the library was having a sale. Why do they do this??!

There are days when understatement is foolish. Today would be one of those.
You know what has happened. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has invited Canada to become an Associate Member. There is no other. This is a first for the E.U..
She did this in her annual State of the Union speech before the European Parliament. Her invitation was greeted by a sustained standing ovation.

EM Forster loved a good dick joke. This from the 1939 short story The Obelisk. Nominally describing a monument:
“Anyone ever seed a bigger one?” he inquired. No one replied, and how should they to so foolish a question? “Stands up, don’t it?” he continued. No one spoke. “No wonder they call that a needle, for wouldn’t that just prick.”

I am a radical in many ways by society’s standards, I’m sure — my ideas of goodness and universal liberation are apparently off the map — but I’m not one of these people who longs for destruction. At heart I’m not a revolutionary, but an engineer.
Destroying things is easy. Building things is hard. And the certitude that we will actually get a better society by destroying the current one first? I don’t buy it. That’s the foolish myth of the greenfield rewrite turned into a social theory.
So when I agree with the QP at the top of the thread, don’t misunderstand me: my agreement is not a wish. It’s a warning.
