I've been pretty quiet here lately, but I've not been goofing off. I am leveraging what I've learned about security and privacy over the last two decades to create guides for the non-technical person. Easy to read (hopefully) guides on messaging, email, browsing and other topics that will make it easy for anyone to improve their Internet privacy. Stay tuned.
By the way, this is not a commercial effort. The guides will be free to download, use and share.

Encryption Is Not a Crime - Privacy Guides
Contrary to what some policymakers seem to believe, whether naively or maliciously, encryption is not a crime. Anyone asserting encryption is a tool for crime is either painfully misinformed or is attempting to manipulate legislators to gain oppressive power over the people. Encryption is not a crime, encryption is a shield.

Chrono Odyssey (Playtest)
Requested access to CO's Playtest this weekend and got the notification on Friday I was in. Installed and launched the game. Game defaulted to Epic settings. Left it there and started the game. Right off the bat, the cinematics had strange artifacting on them. Almost looked like the Steam browser in the background was ghosting into the game somehow.

A recent post about a library publishing guidelines on citing genAI got me thinking about when that might be appropriate (rarely) or not (almost always), and what those cites should look like when they are needed. I have a new post talking about why genAI output shouldn’t be cited in most cases and, for when they must be, giving examples from common style guides.

One thing I've noticed about the coverage of the LA protests is the differing use of "non-lethal" and "less-lethal" in describing weapons being used by the state against protesters.
And in this case I think the liability-dodging term "less lethal" is actually more useful, and should be incorporated into style-guides.

My Personal Privacy - Your resource for achieving better online privacy
Why privacy:
The right to privacy is a well-established, fundamental human right. It is necessary for a safe and just society. It is especially important in regions where intolerance and discrimination are backed by autocratic regimes. While you may not feel the need for privacy in all of your online activity, you should be able to achieve a high level of privacy when you need it. This website and the document…
