DORAN: Hah, hah! [They embrace. Chesil turns and checks out the corridor Tarrant and Vila had come from; Tarrant hurries back to Vila and Doran. The three men confer for a moment.]
DORAN: [To Chesil] Where's the computer room? [Chesil hurries back, and starts off down one arm of the T, beckoning the others to follow. They do so, and she leads them there. The door is closed, and Vila steps forward to see if he can open it. As he does so, Avon'…
Conservatives who once railed against federal agents now applaud them
Trump is deploying some of the government’s policing agencies as an armed presidential force
— sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement,
the Border Patrol,
the National Guard, and others
into areas he considers in need of pacification,
from Los Angeles
to Portland, Oregon,
to Minneapolis.
Many on the right are applauding the crackdown.
The turnabout highlight…
Predictions: how is Trump going to react? Pooh-pooh all the criticism, pretend it's a storm in a teacup, or completely melt-down?
He doesn't normally get blowback from his own side.

Just finished "Endgames" by Ru Xu, sequel to "Newsprints." I was happy to see the characters from the first book get their endings, but Xu feels incredibly out of her depth writing about the politics of empire and the power/complicity of the press, which completely dampened my enjoyment.
As just one example, there's a ton of interesting nuance to explore behind the idea of a disabled imperial ruler and how disadvantage/persecution (from which you have been effectively shielded) does not justify harming others. This book explores none of that.
I think it does serve as a great example of how severely one limits one's own imagination when one buys into the myth of nationhood as natural/inevitable/good. It's not that Xu's politics are especially authoritarian, I think, but that she's just (been kept?) resoundingly naïve, and so her plot resolution feels childish (or perhaps that's an insult to children).

As Donald Trump ramped up his threats against the people he is supposed to be working for,
his administration’s extreme immigration enforcement led Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to admit that anyone
— U.S. citizen or otherwise
— should be prepared to have to prove their citizenship to DHS agents.
Asked Thursday about U.S. citizens being asked to provide proof of citizenship in Minnesota
and whether that is “targeted enforcement,”
Noem said the f…

VILA: Outside.
PELLA: Are the others looking for him?
VILA: Yes, we think he may have had an accident. [pause] How do you know about the others?

One baby Jesus lies in a manger in the snow, wrapped in a silver emergency blanket with his wrists zip-tied.
Mary stands nearby outside the Lake Street Church in Evanston, Illinois, wearing a plastic gas mask and flanked by Roman soldiers in tactical vests labeled “ICE.”
In another Chicago suburb, not far from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that has drawn protests over detentions, a sign at the manger outside the Urban Village Church says
“Due to ICE activit…
Posing as an ideological compatriot, John Williams had penetrated the top ranks of two of the most prominent right-wing militias in the country.
He’d slept in the home of the man who claims to be the new head of the Oath Keepers,
rifling through his files in the middle of the night.
He’d devised elaborate ruses to gather evidence of militias’ ties to high-ranking law enforcement officials.
He’d uncovered secret operations like the surveillance of a young journalist…
In what Arizona’s attorney general slammed as an
“unacceptable and outrageous” act of “unchecked aggression,”
a federal immigration officer fired pepper spray toward recently sworn-in Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva
during a Friday raid on a Tucson restaurant.
Grijalva (D-Ariz.) wrote on social media that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers
“just conducted a raid by Taco Giro in Tucson
— a small mom-and-pop restaurant that has served our c…
