So. That laptop had a quick Slackware install (the nwg iso by @… ; I'm running that hyprland on the desktop of course). Then I added niri to it and removed hyprland and sway 😜! I'll look up that previous config.kdl and start tweaking that Thinkpad tomorrow. With the included DankMaterialShell. Already looking forward to it 🥳

Jemand Erfahrung mit #Hyprland unter #FedoraLinux?
Wie findet ihr die Nutzendenerfahrung?

So, after a week spent on #Wayland with #sway and #hyprland, it's back to xorg and Enlightenment for me. WebEx is unusable in tiling WMs and on Wayland, and muscle memory with E is too strong. Year of the …

Because we all know the ultimate geek garden is Slackware, alive and kicking after 32 years. Running Hyprland 0.50, with nwg-shell on top. Another fine Slacker0ni production!
#slackware #slackeroni #hyprland

Scrot of a terminal window in Hyprland, running on top of Slackware Current, with nwg-shell.

Using Nix as a package manager made me move to NixOS full time. Got Hyprland set up, and everything is working amazingly.

You have to finish on a high.
After one year of Slackware KDE it is time to refresh the muscle memory.
My main distro for the coming year will be Slackware Hyprland (and Niri), with the great nwg-shell on top. A combo I'm very familiar with and which is another excellent Slackeroni production!
KDE will be out of the picture as a daily driver for the first time in 5 years, with Slackware hyprland, VoidLinux and riverwm and Gentoo with dwm all nerd needs are covered.

There is a slackbuild for RiverWM, but it's very old. Grabbed the rpm from Fedora y'day and added River to my Slackware-nwg setup. Niri, river, hyprland and sway. For my panels to behave correctly I use nwg-panel (with niri-tasks) on Niri and Waybar on River. Nwg-panel with the hyprland config on Hyprland. Now I'm merging the applications, so keybinds relate to the same applications across the board.

The Gang of Four has been restored. And all four have been hybridized. This is distro de/wm cli utils by the distro itself (the base) and flatpaks for all applications.
Slackware hyprland with nwg shell, VoidLinux with riverwm, Gentoo with mate/dwm and KaOS with KDE 6.4.2.
All bases covered 🍻😎

To paraphrase Barry Scwartz: The Paradox of Choice – Why More Is Less
With the continuous glitz of KDE, Hyprland, dwm, Slackware and Gentoo as daily drivers it's the time of year to start winding down.
Also because I've been revisiting Steve Anelay's videos (OldTechBloke, sorely missed) I'll spend a month on the Mate desktop, starting this Saturday.
But what to run it on? Help me make a choice, appreciated 😎

Order has been restored.
I'm sorry peeps, but no wifi or bluetooth are dealbreakers.
So, I'm getting there: number 3 is Slackware nwg, a GTK shell on top of (in my case) hyprland.
Another Slackeroni production (kudos to @… and @… !). Defying the idea that Slackware is a bit behind or so, running the 6.14.8 kernel, zram, pipewire, hyprland 0.49, you name it.
For this one I've chosen to let go of flatpak and use native packages (slackbuilds as well, obviously). It's all there.
Gentoo with dwm is the odd one out. Should anything happen there dwm will be loaded on Slack as well.

@… There's a wave of satisfaction engulfing me when I purge 486 fonts and related files. That's bloat for me; it was put there without me selecting it 🤪
The overall Slackware install, with Hyprland, labwc, niri and all applications I could possibly want still remains comfortably below 25 gb, video, music, some flatpaks also included. S…

That plan to move all to Slackware, except for one or two test setups, is finally happening. Saves me a ton in updating as well, with specific updates landing on the NAS.
One KDE 6 laptop, one nwg-hyprland/niri/river nvme and one Mate desktop nvme (thanks OTB aka Steve Anelay for introducing me to Slackware and so much more!)On a roll, all on kernel 6.16 et all.
One N150 with Gentoo and dwm won't go anywhere, although I will put dwm on Slackware as well.
Leaves the ol…

You know what's nice? Terminals like kitty or alacritty, that work on both x11 and wayland. Makes for a more streamlined setup if you're using both. So, kudos to @… and his slackeroni repo, alacritty is in there (bcs of niri) as a ready to use package and has now been deployed by me on both Mate and Hyprland. I can tell you compiling it yourself is a depende…

I've spent the day in my Slackware bubble; on this computer the latest hyprland with nwg-shell.
Of course all runs well; had some great hints and my dots were still available on my Codeberg.
Only one real challenge: installing all of the Rust stack (and that involves a ton of dependencies).
Not bcs I'm a dev, but because I want eza and have a go at wezterm 😆 !
As you know, you'll have to install those separately and by yourself on Slackware. Keeps our garden nicely walled 😜
