The one interesting thing about living only 45 minutes south of the Canadian border is that our daughters now have a lot of experience going back and forth through border crossings, presenting passports, answering questions from serious border people, etc.
Not something they might have experienced as frequently if we lived in, say, Nebraska, or somewhere else more in the middle of the country.

“Supreme Court questions Florida and Texas social media laws on First Amendment grounds”
This is interesting, and quite a tough knot. Add the fediverse into the mix, where there is no “social media platform” per se, but where non-social companies might expose fediverse endpoints, and I have no idea where that leaves us.

Very interesting summary of this workshop. Excellent questions for us all to consider as we continue building decentralized social media…

The space debris that hit a home in Naples was from a pallet discarded from ISS. This creates some interesting liability questions as more than one country made components of the battery pallet.

Perhaps the most interesting article I've read on Europe's efforts to decarbonise road transport, the controversy over electrification, the proposed alternatives, Chinese manufacturing and a way forward for Europe.
(article in French, screenshots translated with DeepL)

Introduction

To decarbonise the transport sector to the level required by European commitments and climate requirements, the electrification of the vehicle fleet is not the only answer. Other means will obviously contribute, which may prove less complex to implement, socially less painful and just as useful in environmental terms. Whichever scenario is chosen, these will have to be implemented: further developing the quantity and quality of public transport (rail, high-frequency express coache…
Technological/energy options other than the pure electrification of vehicles could also contribute to the decarbonisation of mobility. These include alternative fuels such as biogas, agrofuels and carbon-free hydrogen. However, at this stage, they are clearly less efficient in both energy and environmental terms. Nor are they generally economically viable without significant and ongoing government support to develop or maintain their use. What's more, the volumes available for these alternative…

Interesting remarks by Strevens in response to Kitcher's book on the aims and methods of philosophy
> philosophy’s most influential counterexamples are intended ... to play the same role as anomalies in Kuhnian science: to serve as the brave little facts that bring down great theories and make progress possible. If philosophical thought-experimenters conduct themselves ... as empirical scientists... it might be no bad thing for the enterprise of philosophy

The eternal saga of the 1968 Apollo 8 #Earthrise photographs continues ... in the new video youtube.com/watch?v=B7KR1nCA4J that has interesting stuff about pre-Apollo photography from space but still doesn't answer many questions like why the OTHER TWO EARTHRISES of Apollo 8 I found - skyweek.wordpress.com/2023/12/ - were shot with a much shorter focal length when the astronauts had actually gotten interested in this subject after the thrilling experience of unexpectedly seeing the first. Next video please!

If you are in #infosec / #cybersecurity and looking for an easier way to follow interesting infosec accounts that are relatively high signal-to-noise without having to scour the Fediverse, consider checking out the #mammoth Mastodon client and subscribing to the new #indiesec Smart List! Smart Lists are a unique feature pioneered by Mammoth which offers curated lists of accounts in a number of different subject areas.
To start, the IndieSec Smart List (curated by yours truly) features 50 independent security researchers /professionals across many infosec sub-disciplines. I will continue to maintain this list and add new accounts in the coming weeks (I have a whole backlog of accounts I'd like to see added). Over time, this list will seek to feature many accounts that are lower-volume, but high-quality in terms of content. Surfacing harder-to-find accounts (by doing hours of scrolling and curation) is one more way we as a community are improving #discoverability across the network.
Thanks to the @… team and @… for working with me on this new list. If you have any questions about the list feel free to drop me a message!
Edit: I should add - you can see everyone who is featured on this list here github.com/shellsharks/assorte. When new accounts are added, they too will be represented there.
