Algorithmen irren sich selten – nur etwa 50 Millionen Mal. Seit dem EU-DSA mussten Plattformen massenhaft Sperren zurücknehmen. Stefan Krempl zeigt bei heise: Wenn Nutzer endlich Beschwerdewege haben, schrumpft die angeblich unfehlbare Moderation erstaunlich schnell.

And this is working, but it's slow progress.
Mastodon in particular has UX problems that will be very hard to overcome that prevent mass adoption, foremost is that actual conversations (aka replies) are unreliable and slow due to the way posts are distributed. Quote post support was a huge first step to remedy this. I hope we'll see more updates on it.
Bluesky got a big chunk of former Twitter users, especially in some niches like for scientists and activists; they have great performance, reliable threading and replies and really amazing featuers like fully custom feeds—but suffer from intransparent moderation and frankly insufferable leadership (still leagues better than Twitter or Facebook though).
(There's more than these, but these are what I use.)

It is clear Trump now has another platform, after X , to control people in the US and feed them with disinformation. They supplement each other nicely with regard to age groups etc. If FB, WhatsApp, LinkedIn also tighten their "moderation" with regard to anti-trump sentiments, an Orwellian picture emerges.

This is not directed at anyone personally, rather, it's directed at a toxic culture that I see innocent people/victims posting about over and over again.

I wouldn't be asking the question if I didn't believe the question needed to be answered, so I believe an answer of 'yes’ is justified.
I see so many people saying that they leave because they get harassed off of the platform... by reply guys... or sexual harassers... or people who just believe Mastodon can only have a certain kind of content, or person… regardless of its mission as part of an open/free alternative to corporate social media.
A lot of it just seems like bad behaviour by what might be a small number of those 300,000 monthly users (let alone the 3 million accounts in total on that server).
I don't know if "more moderation" is the answer, but that's kind of the only lens I am seeing right now.
