"Social Media" as such might be truly over, but it has less to do with tribal filter bubbles and vibe shifts due to hostile takeovers, and decisions about content moderation.
What is happening online might be very similar to what is happening offline: the disappearance of third spaces due to (platform) capitalism. The dead internet theory is only an offshoot of what we should call *systemic digital vandalism*, *hostile digital infrastructure*, and *dark pattern megastructure…

It's the beginning of the month again and that means new bills for the servers! We have various expenses and moderation work unfortunately takes up a lot of time, which is why we would be very happy about a little support! :boost_requested:

@… do you get a sense the Fediverse movers and shakers share your priorities, or at least have them slotted somewhere in their own priorities list? I am fairly new to Fedi myself, but I get the sense that they have a blind spot on the need for effective moderation tools, e.g. to block abusive instances.

The headline is wrong. It's supposed to say "pervert glasses." I thought we all already agreed to that.

universalism is not to be confused with moderation. considering different viewpoints can you leave you with a more radical viewpoint than either of the viewpoints you considered.
the truth converges, but it is under no obligation to converge at some sort of midpoint.

So the wave of spam-registrations I figured wouldn't really affect us here on the tiny server with registrations closed and clear instructions that only users who know us personally are welcome and we will check.
Turns out no. Our server has run out of email credits from sending lots of email-validation messages.
Hope everyone remembers their passwords, coz password-reset emails and notification emails and whatnot won't be going out for a little while.
All .jp addresses and about half of them bounced as not real email anyway.
Started 10am yesterday, not an hour gone by without some since.
Nothing even clicking those activation links I don't think, certainly nothing filling in the "So who do you know then?" form to create an account.
With email notifications not working, replies to moderation actions could be slower. Not that there's ever much really.
I've turned registration off entirely. Probably should be that way anyhow really here. If you want an account, ask someone who has one personally.

One thing aggressive blocking reveals is that harebrained trolling bait posts are always coming from the same people; I barely see them anymore unless someone makes an actual quote post screenshot.
Moderation can only go so far (and hopefully removes the most egregious problem posters and servers) but curating your feed with muting and blocking when the vibes are off. Arguing if someone is wrong on the Internet may be cathartic but muting and blocking pays real dividends for later.
