Even as it publicly touts its commitment to “strengthening our communities,” Citizens Bank has played a key role in helping GEO and CoreCivic access more than $2.5 billion in fin…

A friend reminded me that today is remembrance day in the Netherlands. Tomorrow, May 5th, is Liberation Day, which celebrates the end of Nazi occupation. On May 4th, at 20:00, the whole country has two minutes of silence to remember those who were lost.
There's something about this that is powerful.
There's a statue that I pass by regularly. It is a monument to the resistance. It is a place where Nazis executed prisoners without trial as retribution for resistance. This evening there were Dutch flags there, though I think about how many anarchists, like Wieke Bosch (who I didn't know anything about), were killed resisting.
I wonder how many names of our martyrs are hidden behind so many national flags. I feel like I should spend more time learning, and think about them on the evening of May 4th.

Looking forward to this tonight at ANU. Daughter is hoping to finish work in time to meet me there. She's having a bonkers week so it could be a bit iffy.
But as it's her birthday this week and Mothers' Day on Sunday, we'll find time on the weekend to eat, drink, and be merry nonetheless.

Winners of the 2025 Close-Up Photographer of the Year #nature #photography

Emerald Glow. 3rd Place, Young. A Cuban tree frog in the photographer’s backyard in Florida. Hawkins-Kimmel: “During the heat of the day, I uncovered this Cuban tree frog hiding in the leaf of a banana tree in my backyard. The frog was very calm and allowed me to slip a flashlight under the leaf to create this effect. My 100mm lens ensured that I didn’t need to get too close, so as not to stress out the frog.”
In the Crowd. Finalist, Young. A group of flamingos in Camargue, France. Godin: “It was the courtship season for flamingos. They were constantly lowering and raising their heads. I had this photo in mind and wanted one flamingo to be sharp in the middle of other blurred flamingos. So I concentrated on one particular flamingo and followed it with my eyes, only pressing the shutter button when it was surrounded by several other flamingo heads.”
Inside the Pack. 2nd Place, Animals. Arctic wolves on the sea ice in a frozen fjord on Ellesmere Island, Canada. Eshel: “Lying on the sea ice of a frozen fjord, I experienced a moment of pure magic when a pack of Arctic wolves approached me out of sheer curiosity. They came so close I could feel their breath, yet I never sensed aggression, only wonder. These wolves, unlike others, have never been hunted or threatened by humans. In the remote wilderness of northern Ellesmere Island, they have no…
Spider Web. 3rd Place, Animals. A Eurasian beaver approaches a spider’s web in Kiskunság National Park, Hungary. Máté: “Years ago, I managed to intervene at the last minute to stop the water department from clear-cutting trees along a 2km stretch of canal. Since then, we’ve worked together. I monitor and notify them of any trees obstructing water traffic, while they avoid unnecessary clear-cutting, preserving a thriving habitat. Beavers returned to this area in 2015, nearly two centuries after …

The next major national action of this movement is not just going to be another protest,” Ezra Levin said.
“It is a tactical escalation... It is an economic show of force, inspired by Minnesota’s own day of truth and action.”
“On May 1, on May Day,
we are saying,
‘No business as usual,’” he said.
“No work, no school, no shopping.
We’re going to show up and say we’re putting workers over billionaires and kings"

Every day, we listen to the local morning show from a national public broadcaster. And every time, the segment from the econ reporter makes me nuts. The talk is always about market instability/opportunity and public policy. What drives me crazy isn't the topics, it's how they're universally framed to avoid calling any aspect of the system into question - the economy is natural and we can only uncover its laws. What's the point if even public media refuses to ask inconvenient,…

Good Morning #Canada
Today is National Toast Day, like you didn't have it circled on your fake holiday calendar. Canadians consume approximately 1.4 billion kilograms of #Bread annually which sounds like a lot until you compare us with Turkey where per capita consumption is almost 200 kilos annually. Bread consumption in Canada was down slightly in 2025, attributed to higher prices due to tariffs. But home baking and shopping at local bakeries all increased. Healthier bread options also increased their market share as customers opted for high-fibre ingredients and foods enriched with prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics... and a bunch-of-other-otics. It may be good news that there are plenty of gut-friendly options available in the shape of whole grain and rich-in-fibre bakery products, but IMO a lot of them taste like cardboard. I said it... not sorry...
