What’s with starting “into the middle of things” (Latin: in medias res)? It is crazy, right? Who would do that (except all the movies that do that)? Who would do that enough over multiple millennia so that people over centuries would have to come up with an entire phrase

"There have been plenty of other criticisms from keyboard warriors concerned about a lack of historical accuracy in a film adaptation of an entirely fictional myth. Having a PhD in classics means I agree with them that Corinthian helmets aren’t historically accurate to the film’s bronze age setting; having a sense of proportion and an understanding of artistic licence means I don’t really care."

I finally got to see the odyssey.
Yes, ear plugs helped.
There is something to the "historical inaccuracy" complaints: There's no way both Batman and Spiderman would appear together in ancient Greece.

I rarely go to the theater anymore, but The Odyssey was absolutely worth it. Incredibly well done. Who knew a cyclops could actually be terrifying or a Trojan horse actually believable?

I haven’t seen the Odyssey movie yet, but this is an interesting commentary on it and the zeitgeist were in.

I have a suggestion for folk watching The Odyssey. Treat it like a rock concert and wear earplugs. After the first three minutes I put them in and I heard dialogue much better. The music is So Loud in it, and the dialogue is more intelligible when you’re not wincing.

I personally don't mind either film version, but you have to approach them in the right frame of mind and accept that they are different mediums suitable for telling different stories. If you hated the LoTR films definitely don't bother with the Odyssey.
I do wonder what Jackson's Odyssey would have been like though. Much more supernatural, for a start. In Nolan's LoTR we wouldn't even have seen the Balrog, it would just be a shadow.
