@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.ioThere's a post going around claiming rice can't be used to absorb water and therefore shouldn't be used to dry wet electronics and that "it's a myth that it's a desiccant" and some people even claiming it's xenophobic—well it's not a myth; it does actually absorb water (this is also why you should close containers with uncooked rice air-tight). The question is more if it is a *good* desiccant in general and for electronics in particular, and the answer is probably it's a so-so desiccant (not terrible but there's better alternatives) and "for electronics, use only as last resort if just air-drying the thing has failed", the issue is mainly that rice is dusty and the dust can get inside the electronics and make things worse.
A protip from dealing with retrocomputing stuff: if it's electronics that you can open and have like one main circuit board in them that you can completely remove, like maybe e.g. a laptop mainboard you can rinse the removed board thoroughly with 99% isopropyl alcohol and let it dry thoroughly (the isopropyl alcohol displaces any water and will evaporate without leaving residue). Note: personally I would do this only with low-voltage electronics.

While air entrainment through sphere impact onto quiescent baths has been extensively studied, real-world interfaces are inherently unsteady, and the influence of surface waves is less understood. In this Letter, we systematically investigate the effect of interfacial geometry on the air entrained by impacting hydrophobic spheres onto an axisymmetric wavefield. By analyzing the resulting cavity across a wide parameter space, including wave phase, driving amplitude, and frequency, we reveal that local interface deformation dramatically alters air entrainment. This effect is driven by a geometric modulation of the splash curtain, which shifts the transition between cavity closure modes. We demonstrate that the influence of the waves is fully described by the local wave slope at the radius of the sphere, which alongside the Weber number We and Bond number Bo, establishes a foundational parametric framework for predicting air entrainment and cavity metrics across highly dynamic, real-world surfaces like the open ocean.

The high concentration of CO2 problem is yet another reason you always want air conditioning available.
It allows you to still get fresh air into buildings regularly (through occasional opening of windows), even when it's hot outside.
"Central air" systems especially are also designed to gently circulate air throughout a space, keeping the time you need to open windows relatively short and overall energy loss low.

We had tickets for a performance at the open air theatre in Chester. So off we went, had a nice lunch and then turned up at the park only to be told that it was so hot they'd had to cancel the performance.
The performances there are in the round and apparently they'd been reading up to 35° in the sun where the actors were supposed to be performing. In full costume.
So they've rebooked us for next week, here's hoping it's not quite so scorchio for that.
