Well, my years-long streak of 100% BGA yield wasn't going to last forever. It looks like I had two pins on the STM32H7 fail open on one of the scope demo boards I made last weekend, perhaps due to insufficient flux, too rapid a thermal ramp, or not enough time above liquidus.
Easily fixed by squirting a bit of flux under the chip and running a second oven cycle (although I then had to swap a few non-reflowable pin headers that I had put on thinking I was done with high-temp processβ¦
Looks like Google is really doing itself in lately by being greedy and not caring. If enough people ditch it, will it eventually die?

My cats have very different bed habits.
Lulu has a fixed spot in my bed. If she comes to sleep with me, she lies down next to my pillow, on my left side.
Mr. Ek tends to find the thickest spot on the bed covers, so I have to dislodge him whenever I lie down. He waits for me to settle then, and lies against me, to my left.
Ruh on the other hand start her night-time routine when I lie down. She walks to the window sill, then walks around the bed, then does a few rounds next to me, before finally lying down for snuggles. Sometimes she repeats the whole process a few times, moving to different sides. However, if Lulu and Mr. Ek take the left side, she is stuck with the right side.
So while the position of the other two cats is pretty predictable, it's hard to figure out where Ruh is. When I lie down, I tend to wonder if it's bright enough outside that once my eyes adjust to the darkness I'd be able to spot her outline. After a minute or two, I realize I need to open my eyes to actually look for her.

Hello. Can anyone tell me if the Britannia Panopticon in #Glasgow is open for viewing Thurs or Fri afternoons? I've read that it is but I really had to dig for that information so I'm a bit wary of trusting it. I was lucky enough to see inside 27 or 28 years or so ago and would love to visit again even though I found it a very spooky space.

In contrast, zero density quantifies the proportional size of a set of integers relative to expanding intervals on the real line. Got tired of having to disassemble my entire-ass computer to get to the second SSD (it's a Streacom DB4 passive cube; everything is an ordeal), so I implemented an external PCIe disk attachment point around the open rear of the case. Now any SSD on a standard PCIe carrier can be swapped out easily!
Many years ago, I discovered that one of my ASUS 2nd-gen Core i motherboards would let me hotswap PCIe devices, under Linux anyway. I don't think I'm brave/dumb enough to try thaβ¦

So the actual practice of mutual support in my community looks like:
- Knowing the semi-official funds for big problems. There's a fire relief fund, and groups who are reliable about getting out the hat for the big problems
- A Discord where people get to know each other
- A tool library, just an informal listing of who has what and enough of a forum to inquire about using something
- Proactively saying "hey, can I drop you a meal?" or "hey, I'm dropping off cookies, want some?" to people.
- People who actively look for opportunities to help in their way. Mine is usually bicycle things, or computer things.
- People who talk about what's in their little free libraries
- People who catalog small resources like classes the library offers or where has open public restrooms
- Where to take donations, and enough chatter that if someone needs something, someone who sees it at a thrift shop might pick it up
It's all super informal, but I keep my eye on the pulse of it because I have conversational habits that let me connect people. That's really all it takes: awareness and connecting people.
It's interesting to know about some of the historical strategies for preventing revolution. There were basically two strategies to protect the institution of monarchy.
Metternich believed that brutal repression was the only answer: censor the press, monitor communication, create a coalition of kings and persecute revolutionaries wherever they could be found. Giving even an inch, he believed, would open the door to revolution.
But there was another approach: concession. By giving a little bit - create a constitution (even if it's meaningless), allow people to vote (even if the people they vote for have no power), etc - could offer a release and prevent revolution. There are still monarchies in Europe. They're no longer absolute, but they still hold a lot of power (even if people *think* of them as being decorative). They held that power by giving up a little bit at a time to slow down progress.
The fact is, they were both right.
The US has kept their regressive oligarchy stable by oscillating between the two. We are in the brutal repression phase, where concessions are stripped away and radicals are suppressed. This phase breaks up the progress made and pushes back the clock. The next phase, if the US makes it that far, if the fascists are smart enough to let go, will be concession. They will give a few inches to keep everything from collapsing. They'll give just enough room to get people back to brunch.
While they're at brunch, the next phase will be planned.
This is not really conscious, but an emergent behavior of the two party system. It's just kind of how the dichotomy of liberalism and conservatism works. Government is a fundamentally oppressive entity. The question is really, how long will we let the pendulum swing? How small of a concession will we accept, or will we demand everything now?
The Jacobian conjecture counterexample, ErdΓΆs unit distance problem solution, etc. are all major breakthroughs.
If you like it or not, we know these results because of AI and they are important!
If AI systems can solve what used to be a good PhD level problem, then what constitutes a PhD level problem must be much harder/better now. In the view of the AI-open group, this pushes many PhD theses from the AI-closed group into the βnot good enough for the degreeβ territory.

#DearLazyWeb: I'm looking for an open source (and self-hosted) ad-hoc tool library management app. There's a lot of library management but not focused on community tool libraries. I'm not able to really find what I'm looking for, but I want to make sure there's nothing else before I put in the time to write one.
The idea is that there would be objects that are shared but owned by individuals, and objects that would be bought together.
I'll probably start with a simple spreadsheet. Here's a rough data model I'm thinking about:
- id (serial number)
- description (what is it)
- location (where it belongs)
- contact (who has it now)
- owner(s)
- buyout (if someone leaves, how much would it cost for the collective to buy it, if possible)
- picture (optional)
Anything that's sort of close would probably be good enough.
