If I don't force-close my morse code drill app, sometimes it just starts playing even if I'm nowhere near my phone. Often sitting a good distance away charging in the middle of the night. The author of the app has looked for and failed to find any logical cause for this problem.
It's a google Pixel, and maybe I'm seeing a variation on something others have been seeing:
Fascinating.
I just ran the math; and Apple's displays/devices have almost *precisely* the same "pixels-per-degree-of-visual-arc" (a much more important measurement than raw PPI.)
- Pro Display XDR (at 70cm) is ~53° of visual arc; that gives it ~112 px/deg
- M1 Macbook Pro at 61cm is ~31° of visual arc; ~110 px/deg
- iPhone 17 Pro at 35.5cm is ~23° of visual arc; ~113 px/deg
This smacks of intention.

@… They Bleed Pixels is a pretty sweet game! Thanks for making it.
One of my favorite emojis is the "hugs" emoji 🫂. Or an "okay_blob" custom reacji that my favorite Slack uses. I use it all the time to indicate "I hear you and I know what you're saying is emotional. I support you".
Another very progressive Slack I'm on has a "hugs OK?" emoji you are supposed to use first. Only if the other person responds with the "hugs OK!" emoji are you then allowed to respond with an actual "hug" emoji.
I think I'm a pro-explicit-consent person. But it strikes me that this careful three-way handshake, all for 16x16 pixels in a virtual environment, may be a little much.
Incroyable.

An approximate history of my amateur phone photography:
1. Really poor photos. Unsavory interest in (low resolution) panoramas.
2. Photos get a little better. Sometimes they're HDRs (I suspect the camera app was set to "auto").
3. A new phone. Higher resolution and a gyroscope.
4. Switching to LineageOS, and therefore to #OpenCamera. HDR enabled unconditionally.
5. HDR does not always come great (compared to the stock Motorola app that doesn't work anymore). I enable saving component photos, so I could try getting a better quality combination using the PC. I never manage that.
6. I start experimenting with exposure correction (combined with HDR). Sometimes I do multiple photos with different "Eves" to choose the best one.
7. A new phone. Finally, given even the gyroscope was failing already.
8. I learn that Pixels have "HDR " that gets activated when you do standard mode photos. For a while I do both standard and HDR photos; also I compare the middle component image with the standard mode image. [https://opencamera.sourceforge.io/help.html#faq]
9. Before I reach any final conclusions, I read "What is HDR, anyway?" I disable HDR entirely, instead I save standard mode (i.e. HDR ) raw images (which presumably aren't affected by HDR ) [https://www.lux.camera/what-is-hdr/]. Not that I ever managed to get anything good out of raws.
10. I discover that I can switch the lens. Today I've made my first photos, switching lens to get optical zoom 💪.

I have a trick I call "The 1920 Method".
I resize most images to 1920 pixels wide before I post them to Mastodon or to my own web site. This has allowed me to keep things small, and fast, and not have to increase server space or feel like I'm putting a burden on other systems.
You'd be surprised how many images we share online work just fine at lower resolution.

AI is a 0.01 quality JPEG.
It ingests a staggering amount of data to produce a relatively tiny file that you can decompress with a lot of guesswork on the computer's side.
The result is, usually, mostly ok on a larger scale but when you try to look at individual pixels, they're the correct color only by pure luck.

Sometimes I catch myself slipping into digital nihilism, staring at the internet as if it were some twisted feast of flickering shadows that I don’t need to feed on just to keep moving.
You wouldn’t try to live by swallowing a screen or digest pixels, so why treat this endless stream of noise as anything close to essential?
The so-called connections are just distractions, echoes bouncing off empty walls, and the identities online slip through like smoke dissolving before you even…
