We’re proud to support Polar Connect Step 2 (24-EU-DIG-PC2) as an Associated Partner, working alongside the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, NORDUnet, GlobalConnect, CSC, and the Swedish Research Council (the project coordinator).
With the Grant Agreement now signed, PC2 takes a major step toward realising Polar Connect – a resilient Arctic submarine cable system linking Europe, North America, and East Asia for the benefit of the global internet.

❄️ It’s freezing cold outside here in Germany, and this is an interesting explainer of why that is: a warming event in the polar region is leading to an early collapse of the polar vortex, so Europe and North America are flooded with cold air, while the North Pole is unusually warm. #weather #climate

Blueberry species (genus Vaccinium) circled the Northern Hemisphere to travel from North America to Hawai'i— and then closed the loop to hybridize with a North American species
#science

Figure 2 from the linked paper, showing a hypothesized dispersal history from North America east to Eurasia, Japan, and Polynesia on a north polar view of the globe; and a time-calibrated phylogeny of Vaccinium species by their geographic locations

On an island in the Arctic Ocean, in a region that is warming as much as seven times as fast as the rest of the planet, the food chain is being turned upside down.
Underwater kelp forests are surging into once-frozen waters, replacing other native species.
Reindeer, cut off from traditional foraging routes over vanishing sea ice, now graze on seaweed when they cannot reach inland grasses and lichen.
And polar bears, deprived of the ice platforms they once used to hunt seals, …

Me entering the lake for a swim #Uckermark #coldswim

A polar bear wades near a body of water surrounded by autumn foliage and tall grass. The sky is overcast, and the scene captures a calm natural setting.

The first elements of the Russian Orbital Station, or ROS, were to launch in 2027
so it would be ready for human habitation in 2028.
Upon completion in the mid-2030s, the station would encompass seven shiny new modules,
potentially including a private habitat for space tourists.
It would be so sophisticated that the station could fly autonomously for months if needed.
Importantly, the Russian station was also to fly in a polar orbit at about 400 km.
Thi…
