Certain kinds of gut microbes absorb toxic Pfas
“forever chemicals”
and help expel them from the body via feces,
new first-of-its-kind University of Cambridge research shows.
The findings are welcome news
as the only options that exist for reducing the level of dangerous Pfas compounds from the body are bloodletting and a cholesterol drug that induces unpleasant side effects.
The microbes were found to remove up to 75% of some Pfasfrom the gut of mice.
Had a great week at WWDC of seeing people I rarely see more than once per year, putting faces to names for people I've previously met online, and meeting people for the first time! Thanks to everyone who said hello!
(And now, after that great workout for my extrovert side, I'm glad to be home nurturing my inner introvert! And probably using fewer exclamation points.)
Gotta love when optimizations and unit tests result in you catching what you thought was a regression, but turned out to be a long-standing corner case bug you've been chasing forever.
Tl;dr implemented an AVX512F version of the inner loop for the eye pattern, which had previously only supported AVX2 and AVX2-FMA.
It promptly failed the unit test despite being a straightforward vector stretch of the AVX2 version (with some small changes because a few instructions I used from …

Calamus 35 To you of New England
Honestly I find this Whitman entreaty to national unity kind of tedious. It's charming and American but it's just so earnest. And this poem doesn't have much music.
Stretching for a gay reading...
a superb friendship, exalté, previously unknown,
... it waits ... latent in all men.
Once again his calls for unity are partly rooted in relationships between men: "friendship" here, the least sexual of his words. But it's also a sort of hidden connection, unknown, latent, and that's a little queer-coded to me.
The most recent episode of #AmericanHysteria podcast was a very interesting discussion about J. Edger Hoover tying the government to his religious views more openly and extensively than I'd previously understood.
May have to check out Lerone A. Martin's book to get all the details. It's continously surprising to me (though it really shouldn't be) how some people …

The Trump administration on Monday took another step to make it harder to find major, legally mandated scientific assessments of how climate change is endangering the nation and its people.
Earlier this month, the official government websites that hosted the authoritative, peer-reviewed national climate assessments went dark.
Such sites tell state and local governments and the public what to expect in their backyards from a warming world and how best to adapt to it.

Is it better to let people know when you see them doing something when others have done something similar previously?
I've found myself doing this a lot around live coding, on one level it seems helpful to know about prior art, and fun to talk about weird old projects/events. On the other it could be stifling to obsess over identifying the 'first' person to try something, and might feel like old people are trying to pitch their tents all over your garden.

Apparently, my heat tolerance is way lower than it was last summer (previously 94 F). Running 5 miles in 80 F weather today triggered a mild asthma attack (I always have my inhaler with me), and my heart rate hit 190. The high HR was probably a combination of the temperature outside, pushing too hard, and all the medications I'm on. Classic fuck around and find out 😖
I will be inside on the treadmill until it's low 70s from now on.

the hardest 1990s Stereolab album for me to get into is Cobra and Phases Group, and I think it's because "Infinity Girl" and "Op Hop Detonation" sound so much like songs they made previously. it trips me up, like I'm listening to a remix with new lyrics. other than that it's a fine album
We see despicable kow-towing of the officers of Fort Liberty (aka "bragg") in putting a tailored audience as a backdrop for FFOTUS and Hogsbreath - and allowing the soldiers to engage in unlawful political acts.
Previously I had faith that officers in the US Military would refuse unlawful orders.
I no longer have that faith.
I am beginning to fear that the path out of maga-land will not be a peaceful one.
Does anybody else have family members who don't know the difference between your bicycle and your car? I had somebody ask me yesterday if my car is capable of carrying 225 lb of cargo in it. Previously, I was asked if it was legal to drive a 4-door hatchback on the road and urged to only drive it in bicycle lanes? 🤨

Is Earendel a Star Cluster? Metal Poor Globular Cluster Progenitors at z~6: #Earendel within the Sunrise was previously identified as a candidate star or binary due to size constraints placed by the lensing magnification, however recent works have suggested this constraint may be relaxed to even the size of star clusters. Here, we explore the hypothesis that Earendel may actually be a star cluster, and simultaneously evaluate other star clusters within the host galaxy."
