The framing of digital pollution does mirror environmental pollution, e.g. in rivers and streams in many ways: In those, pollution can be coming from concentrated "point-sources" as well from more diffuse "non-point" sources. Including the problem of "too much of a good thing", where an excess of matter creates an eutrophication of an ecosystem that ultimately asphyxiates it.
Beyond being an apt metaphor, can we learn something from environmental science for online communities?

I'm a chemist. As a grad student I was a TA and a tutor. I taught college chemistry classes.
That's teaching a subject, not communicating about a technical issue (yes, these really are different skills)
And climate change advocacy has highlighted how difficult communicating is.
I wish this proposal had been enacted when I was a student.

"What about the developers who start their careers during the 2020s? How will they deal with the ever-present issue of comparing floating-point values in a world that prefers TikTok to books? Well, they will probably ask an LLM how to do that, and not even bother about this issue anymore. Welcome to the future!"

Moving on to an excellent keynote by Ana Persic from @… , reiterating that we are not doing #OpenScience for the sake of open science - we have a global agenda aiming to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, which needs Open Science to succeed. Science is also a human right and to share science is thus a moral obligation. We are not there yet - there is a rise of mistrust in science, misinformation, actions from non-state actors such as the private sector.

An international group is organizing an observing campaign through the Citizen Science Working Group of the #LUMIO mission: LUMIO is an ESA space mission to observe lunar #impact flashes (LIFs) from space, on the lunar far side (#Geminid meteoroid stream, 13-15 Dec 2025. During the maximum of the stream, the number of visible impact flashes will be higher than during non-shower times, therefore there is a good chance of detecting at least some impact flashes.
Observations can be made using moderately-sized telescopes and a video camera. Abstract: Until recently, attosecond optical spectroscopy and quantum optics evolved along non-overlapping directions. In attosecond science, attosecond pulses have been regarded as classical waves, applied to probe electron dynamics on their natural time scale. Here, we transfer fundamental concepts of quantum optics into attosecond physics, enabling control of both the properties of the XUV attosecond pulses and the quantum fluctuations of matter on attosecond time scales. By combining bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) with a strong laser field to drive high-harmonic generation, we transfer the quantum properties of the BSV onto the resulting XUV attosecond pulses. Applying advanced attosecond interferometry, we reconstruct the quantum state of the XUV high harmonics and their associated attosecond pulses with attosecond precision. Finally, we resolve the squeezing of the electron's wavepacket during one of the most fundamental strong-field phenomena - field induced tunneling. The ability to measure and control quantum correlations in both electrons and XUV attosecond pulses establishes a foundation for attosecond quantum electrodynamics, manipulating the quantum state of electrons and photons with sub-cycle precision.
