On Tuesday, the SFMTA board casually discussed another fare increase, ignoring the harms that could cause, including to votes for next year's funding measures. All while the possibility of simply keeping parking meters turned on on evenings and Sundays was left off the table.

If I were voting today in D4 I'd rank Jeremy Greco first because he's the only pro–Sunset Dunes candidate and seems cool generally; he's a longtime co-op worker at Other Avenues and wants to make it easier to start co-ops.
I'd rank Natalie Gee second. It sucks she wants to turn the park back into a highway, but so do all the non-Jeremy candidates, and she's the only one I trust to tax the rich to build affordable housing.

Screenshot of Garry Tan's tweet, "This is what my private alcohol stash looks like at the Lion's Den VIP area in Chinatown. Laughing crying face emoji"

It's just Balvenie, Roederer Estate, and MacAllan 18. A plaque says: "Garry Tan, SF social media troll, Twitter menace."

Today in the drizzle I stopped by the Living Library, a beautiful native plant garden near SF's Balboa Park at the San Jose/Seneca intersection. Highly recommend a visit to see some #ceanothus in bloom and California poppies and island mallows beginning to, and much more.

A lush green garden with various shrubs and forbs, a curving stone path to the left, a couple of trees, and there's a two-story school building with sand-colored walls off to the side. There's an information panel that's too distant to make out the text in this photo.
A shrub with large leaves and a few small pink flowers. Seems to be Malva assurgentiflora, or island mallow.
A row of two or three shrubs that look like one shrub at first glance, but there are two distinct types of flowers: one variety is more blue-indigo and larger, the other is smaller and purple. They have dark green leaves and are something in the Ceanothus genus, or mountain lilac.
Information panel titled: "California Native Plants: The ecological benefits of planting Native San Francisco. Life frames a living library."

A bunch of text I can't fit here about the benefits of planting native, restoring nature, one plant at a time. A colorful drawing shows some California native plants and their associated pollinators: California poppy and native bees, milkweed and monarch butterfly, yarrow and hummingbird, buckwheat and native bee, toyon and cedar waxwing.

This survey question is rich. This is from one of the BigMoneySF groups trying to make it harder for the rest of us to put stuff on the ballot.
But they will never ban paid signature gathering, the one thing that would most effectively keep crap off the ballot. They just want to raise the signature threshold for the rest of us. It would still be easy for billionaires to abuse the system and qualify any ballot measure they like, just hard for anyone else.

Survey question:

Large corporations are easily able to take advantage of our current ballot measure system. Making it harder to get measures on the ballot will minimize their influence, and prevent wealthy corporations from abusing our election system to protect their profits.

Please indicate whether you find it very convincing, somewhat convincing, or not convincing as a reason to support the proposal.

I've checked "Not convincing."

"Permitting Parking in Driveways" is at Monday's SFBOS land use committee.

Today I saw a 14R miss the green light on Mission at 24th St, despite the green being extended for the bus. It was stuck behind a long line of drivers illegally going straight. This is supposed to be a right turn only except Muni. Scofflaw driving is defeating transit priority on Mission Street. #sfpol

Two cars in the red, bus-only lane that goes straight, instead of the right-turn only lane that is the only lane legal for them to use. A sign says right turn only, except trucks, buses, taxis and bicycles. Up ahead you can see a line of cars that have just made the same illegal move, backed up through the intersection.

This is why I don't fully trust 48hills, even though they're on "my side" in being pro-labor and anti-billionaire. Tim Redmond thinks it's a good thing that a 100% affordable housing development was forced to lop a floor off to preserve views 😫
"The staff reached out to the neighbors,[...]took feedback, and as a result made some changes that lowered the height of the new buildings. That, in a reasonable world, is how this should work" No it's not!!…

Copaganda watch: Here's a story about a struggling restaurant in SoMa, owned by two women of color.
Then there's a sharp pivot to Supervisor Matt Dorsey's solutions, all based on coercion and punishment: "a multi-layered strategy of business curfews, higher police staffing and a new sobering center." This would only continue to make conditions worse.

In the latest clear violation of the Transit First policy in the city charter, SFMTA is canceling transit-only lanes because business owners whined about congestion. Who will be the one to finally sue the city to enforce Transit First?

This is so much more of a shitshow than even I realized. Alan Wong was making major amendments and sending them to his prospective co-sponsors in literally the last *hour* before the deadline.

Today’s one small action to push SF progressives away from the embrace of car brain.
All candidates who have filed in that district oppose the park, so it’s an easy call that she would be my first place vote if I lived there, regardless. But unless that stance changes, am I spending my precious time on her campaign? Nah. #sfpol

A volunteer or staffer text banks me to come to Natalie Gee’s supervisor campaign kickoff. I reply that as a supporter of Sunset Dunes park, I can’t support a candidate trying to close the park, although I’m aligned with Natalie on other issues and love her labor background.

Outerlands' owner "said that weekend brunch is busier than ever thanks to Sunset Dunes, the new park on the car-free Great Highway a few blocks away."
Who could have guessed? Parks that draw people to the neighborhood are better for business than highways that bypass the neighborhood.

Apparently Mayor Lurie is making a "safe streets" announcement Monday at 11 at City Hall. Hopefully the announcement is that he's resigning. That would be a huge win for safe streets. #sfpol

I guess the executive power grab attempts in SF government are taking multiple forms. Not only the Commission Streamlining Task Force, but Mayor Lurie and Board President Mandelman have also created this "charter reform working group," where there's no public comment and major city departments are excluded.

Kind of a cool proposal in terms of squeezing density onto a slim site, but I wish it didn't have 10 parking spaces for 11 units. That much parking shouldn't be allowed so close to BART, inducing more driving trips on Guerrero which is already a traffic sewer.

This sucks, but I don’t think any organized constituency is going to fight it so it’s as good as law. Coming to SF: more businesses where you can’t buy anything without being added to their email list for the rest of your life.

I love Deerhoof’s Actually, You Can not just as a great, fun album but as a time capsule from an optimistic moment. In late 2021, we seemed to be emerging from the shadows of Trump and Covid-19—who’d have thought the Four Seasons presser and the vaccines, respectively, didn't end them? The music bottles up joyful, radical imaginings of a better world that were in the air since the George Floyd rebellion, not yet extinguished by the reactionary “crime” panic to come.

Scott Wiener is trying to change the slogan from "Abolish ICE" to "Abolish and replace ICE."
I guess he figures there still needs to be *some* agency that deports international students who criticize Israel, a Trump regime priority he's bolstered in California by co-authoring #AB715.

Post by @scott_wiener on Instagram 1 hour ago: "I've been saying it since 2018 and I'll say it again: we must abolish and replace ICE."

Image is a picture of text, "This ICE agent and any officials who violate the law must be held accountable. In California, we're leading the way because no one is above the law. We need to get Trump and his thugs out of power as soon as possible to end this lawlessness. And we need to abolish and replace ICE with an agency committed to democracy, the constit…

Finally the DSA SF Board of Supervisors scorecard is out ✨
The board passed a lot of terrible stuff last year, usually with Fielder and Walton in the minority (sometimes joined by Chan, Chen, or Melgar). I'm glad we have it on record with explanations. We're going to hold them accountable. A few good wins as well

"Did the Upper Great Highway closure make Sunset neighborhood streets less safe? Supervisor Alan Wong claimed it did at a January 8, 2026 press conference, citing a simple year-over-year map comparison of crash data. But my analysis, using the same DataSF crash data with rigorous statistical controls, finds no evidence to support that claim, and if anything, the data suggest the opposite."

At the #muniForever rally, D9 supervisor Jackie Fielder calls on Mayor Lurie to raise the parcel tax cap for skyscrapers from $400k to $800k to raise more Muni funding, and eliminate tenant passthroughs. “As Muni goes, so goes the city.” Says if we don’t see movement in negotiations, we’ll be back with more to announce. 1/3
