Annual plant sale at #SutroStewards nursery! I picked up a couple of rare San Francisco wallflowers and some little coast buckwheats, both #CaliforniaNatives.

View downhill to the nursery, on a long strip of land from left to right. It’s foggy and there’s a euc forest behind
Sutro Nursery Plant Sale. Hand-drawn propped cardboard sign with art of orange and yellow flowers, one with a purple butterfly resting on top.
Two gallon pots of wallflower and several thin deep pots of buckwheat in a bike bag. None are in bloom currently, it’s just green leaves.

This is a weird book because it’s so well-written, darkly witty and clarifying, I can’t stop turning pages, but it also makes me not want to get out of bed. I’m banking on an energizing call to action at the end

The Long Heat: Climate Politics When It’s Too Late, by Wim Carton and Andreas Malm. The cover shows two masked people holding flares on a catwalk above a large rounded gray metal structure, presumably protestors on a piece of oil infrastructure.

Last year global temperatures were 1.6°C over the pre-industrial average, the first year to breach the 1.5° goal.
"One or two years that exceed 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level does not imply that the Paris Agreement has been breached. However, with the current rate of warming at more than 0.2°C per decade, the probability of breaching the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement within the 2030s is highly likely."

Oak Woodlands has long been my favorite part of Golden Gate Park, but only recently have I come to appreciate Buena Vista Park for its own coast live oak forest... and even more recently noticed this enormous coffeeberry shrub at the bottom of the hill

A wide park path rises up a gentle incline with wooden steps to a bench, under and surrounded by coast live oak trees.
The underside of some coast live oak trees, showing how their branches grow in a spirally fashion.
A wide and tall coffeeberry shrub fills 3/4 of the frame, while beyond it across the street is a three-story Victorian apartment building with bay windows. The shrub has deep green leaves.

I'm currently reading The Long Heat by Wim Carton and Andreas Malm and highly recommend it. Do not be daunted by the page count of 704 pages. It has so many notes at the back, without back matter it's only ~420 pages. Hard to read emotionally, though. It paints a stark picture of earth's near future and the massive destruction of human and other-than-human life ahead, and the insane brinkmanship of elite consensus.

Paved path branching off the Mansell Promenade, itself a wide paved path with designated areas for walking and for biking in each direction.
Path continues, curving around higher ground on the left. Cut tree branches lie in a barren area to the right of the path, a tree is off to the left.
Path continues and meets up with another paved path, turning right to the road (Shelley Promenade).
Path ends onto Shelley Promenade with a curb ramp. To the right, Shelley descends a steep hill.

It was frustrating to see all the “not a paid protester” signs today. These scabs are driving down wages for hardworking unionized paid protesters.

Charlottesville, VA is the latest city with smarter elected leaders than San Francisco (where we continue to double down on partnering with ICE-collaborating Flock Security).

I thought I'd be able to finish reading Anti-Oedipus - how hard could it be? - but it turns out that was deleuzeional.

Shoutout to Finjan Qahwa at Mission & Valencia for letting me buy a delicious Moroccan mint tea and bash out a blog post between 7 and 9pm. Gotta love a coffeeshop with evening hours

A few years ago I started carrying a book almost every time I leave the house and substituting it for looking at my phone when waiting in line, sitting on the bus, etc. This is now a trend apparently

the last numbered page of the new Carton and Malm book is 629, but the last page excluding the notes, index and acknowledgements is 425. I can't imagine it's good for sales to make your book seem like 50% more of an unapproachable doorstop than it is. wonder why they don't put the notes online at that point

"Jesus and Kathia are not sure what to do now, or where they will sleep if their vehicle is towed. The options for family shelter are limited until her child is born, she said, and she does not want to leave her dog, who also lives in her RV, behind."

"But as you can see, the programs do come at a cost... we estimate about $27.4m a year goes to the administrative costs and also the projected fare revenue reduction."
I'm waiting for the slide where they estimate the much higher cost of all the unmetered parking spaces across the city, and of turning off meters at 6pm and on Sundays. I'm sure that'll definitely be later in this presentation, right?

An SFMTA slide: "Transit Fare Discount Programs. SFMTA provides financial relief for people with low-incomes or experiencing homelessness."

Table of discounts and their estimated cost, totaling $27.4 million in fiscal year 2024 to 2025. The categories are lifeline monthly pass (50% discount), free Muni for youth, free Muni for seniors and people with disabilities, access pass, and Clipper START.

one of my hottest takes is that shared laundry machines in an apartment building is better than in-unit. it's a good example of how individual solutions can be worse than collective ones.
with shared machines you can use two machines at once at a less-busy time. a single in-unit machine would take twice as long. in-unit means the noise the machine generates is inside your apartment, so you can't have guests over or take a meeting while it's running

Excellent news. Greatly reduces the risk of displacement while still upzoning the west side.

Have I posted about Magic Fig yet? So good. I saw them the other night with Mayya at 4 Star Theater and am becoming increasingly obsessed with this album

"'We do respect and appreciate the temporary activation but it’s time to start moving forward on the original purpose for this site,' Mahmood said, referring to affordable housing."
Ok good start, now do Parcel K in Hayes Valley. Or is this Mahmood's stance only in poor parts of his district?

I'd been meaning to switch off T-Mobile for years because of their dead zone in the Mission but never got around to it. This boycott that begins this weekend is pushing me to finally do it
