Great post by Aaron Tay: 'the next time you see an “AI-powered search engine,” maybe the first question shouldn’t be “Is this AI?” but rather “What kind of AI, “where and how it is used in the pipeline”.'

Content warning: Chatbots

My opinion on chatbot is starting to shape into it's final form:
It's a search engine that gives you only average results, and that is incapable of citing the source.
It's also capable of mixing in multiple averages to make one giant brown color.
And this is a direct consequence of the design: it's trained to generate generic credible text and that's what it will do.

“look, the way grok is integrated into X is gross and stupid and bad, but i do believe having an LLM familiar help you navigate the dark forest of the internet is going to be the future — ideally this is on your device or through a trusted and secure host, but it will be immensely helpful”

"Out of curiosity, I used this brand-new search engine you might have heard about, “Google,” to learn more about the subject. I found a copy of CaptureNet, a freeware packet sniffer part of the SpyNet/PeepNet by Laurentiu Nicula; then I looked up for the port number used by MSN Messenger (it was 1863 in case you were wondering.) Finally, I found out how to enable “promiscuous mode” in the network card in my laptop."

#smallweb that only contains personal blogs (no medium)

Google has filed a lawsuit to protect its search results,
targeting a firm called SerpApi
that has turned Google’s 10 blue links into a business.
According to Google, SerpApi ignores established law and Google’s terms
to scrape and resell its search engine results pages (SERPs).
This is not the first action against SerpApi, but Google’s decision to go after a scraper could signal a new, more aggressive stance on protecting its search data.

I can foresee website hosting plans being split into "browser only" (requiring proof-of-work/proof-of-cognition cookies) and "open" (to bots, including archives and search engine indexers).
The AI scrapers (and, to some extent, many more unauthorised pen-testers) have made dynamic websites far more expensive to run over the last year or two.

Why does this keep happening? Grammarly recently introduced an AI chat, and also, their spell-checking service, which previously was their main product, suffers from constant reliability issues since them. I'm paying for this service, because it used to be good, I never asked for an AI chat. I can go to ChatGPT, or Google, which used to be a search engine and is now an AI chat with a worse version of the search engine attached. Not that I'd want any of that.

Content warning: AI bubble

There is a scenario in which the AI bubble will not explode and a few companies will survive: replacing google as the repository of knowledge.
Currently all (allow me the exaggeration) knowledge of humanity is gated by google, which acts as a gateway to any question you have about everything.
What if this gateway shifts and it's not a search engine any more but an LLM? This means that these companies will not only detain the access to the knowledge but also the knowledge itsel…
