"So often in the study of religion, we rely on published literary materials. This class is really intended to help students—and to help myself—think about the full social, economic, and political life into which what we call religion emerges. Religion is never absent from those very concrete connections.”

Can we just dispense with grades already? Universities' rush to adopt LLMs, including providing students free access to more advanced versions, has made whatever grades we give wholly suspect (I wouldn't trust a transcript if I was hiring our students). At the same time, my institution at least has given instructors neither guidance nor support in dealing with the fallout. I am more than happy to teach those who want to learn. If the others want to spend their time querying an AI, so…

All this brings me back to some text I was writing yesterday for my students, on which I’d appreciate any thoughtful feedback:
❝You can let the computer do the typing for you, but never let it do the thinking for you.
This is doubly true in the current era of AI hype. If the AI optimists are correct (the credible ones, anyway), software development will consist of humans critically evaluating, shaping, and correcting the output of LLMs. If the AI skeptics are correct, then the future will bring mountains of AI slop to decode, disentangle, fix, and/or rewrite. Either way, it is •understanding• and •critically evaluating• code — not merely •generating• it — that will be the truly essential ability. Always has been; will be even more so. •That• is what you are learning here.❞

About a year ago, I helped move some young relatives in and out of Boston, one leaving Chinatown, the other moving in on September 1 (locally, the day when most of the students renting in the area move in; it causes predictably awful traffic and parking problems).  Because of the parking problems, I did most of this help using a bicycle with a 300lb capacity.
