Wonder why this #Indonesia #fire, which I only just read about, didn't get nearly as much attention as the one that happened in #Switzerland a week later.
I was surprised to learn that famously neutral #Switzerland 🇨🇭 has been a member of the Council of Europe 🇪🇺 (which is *not* the same as either of the European Council 🇪🇺 and the Council of the European Union 🇪🇺) since 1963. For reference, Switzerland joined the #UnitedNations in 2002.
It's January 4th and I've already got a few orders this year for my little hobby business.
One from the UK, one from Ireland, and one from Switzerland.
Last year we shipped close to 80% of the orders to the US and almost 20% to the UK, with a few other countries besides those two.
I do feel like I'm seeing fewer US sales since the beginning of 2024, file that as you will.
Overall sales were down a bit in 2024 but I did a few larger projects for folks that …
It still includes some road widening.

Darkness draped Crans-Montana,
a ski resort in the Swiss Alps with a reputation for posh luxury.
Le Constellation, however, had few pretensions:
a cavernous venue with TV screens on the top floor to watch sport,
and a basement with low lighting, loud music and a dancefloor.
It attracted a young crowd, including under-18s, mainly from Switzerland and continental Europe,
and early on Thursday morning hundreds thronged the venue to see in 2026.

Johnny Harris (he doesn't seem to have a presence here) has a really good video out right now on public transportation in Switzerland. "By law, every village in Switzerland, which has people living all year round, they have the right of public transportation. It can be a train, it can be a gondola, it can be a bus. Whatever." That's pretty cool.

Last week, tramping the Milford Track with my whānau (it was stunning), I ended up chatting with a lone fellow tramper from Switzerland. Got to practice my German quite a lot... turns out he's a recently retired heart surgeon, who primarily did heart transplants. 😲 Turns out he wants nothing more to do with his profession & is very pessimistic about the EU social situation heading rightward. He finds Aotearoa magical & inspiring & is busy doing as many Great Walks as he possi…

Last night, I was reading a book that contained this passage about Mussolini, and it took me an hour to fully grasp what this meant:
"[his 2-year stay in Switzerland] had initiated Mussolini to a form of revolutionary socialism based not on materialism or orthodox Marxism, but on a cocktail of voluntarists and anti-rational principles derived from Pareto, Le Bon, Nietzsche, and Sorel"

Yesterday, a friend told me a fun linguistic experience: He and his partner (both speaking standard German) spent some time in Switzerland, both kids are born there. Kids went to crèche and kindergarten, they moved back to Germany when the oldest was 7. At home, all 4 spoke standard German. The parents only realized by visiting hours to crèche and kindergarten, that both kids were fluent in Züridütsch

Days like today I miss Switzerland, I miss the people and scenery, and I miss having a six-figure, ideation-focused, two-hour-wine-lunch laptop job in a sensible, permissive country, far, far away from the Anglosphere. Why anybody willingly lives here is a mystery to me. Why I returned, even more so.

And guess who wants to keep negotiating even though it should by now be clear that these tariffs are completely arbitrary and just a way for the regime to line their pockets?

SNF (Switzerland) restrictions proposed: only 1 concurrent research grant per PI (plus maybe one coop), only 1 proposal per year.
🔥 Hot take (since I'm not at all operating like this currently): I actually think this might be a good idea? It would curb some of the biggest "research mills", where one PI has a huge pyramid scheme underneath them, and might encourage more careful grant proposals, slower science. And might even put more emphasis back into the basic research funding (instead of the grant lotteries)?
(Maybe naive, I know, and I have no idea how this would be implemented)

I rarely make electronic shopping lists, so I only discovered today that the Notes app has a handy feature that converts kilograms into tons. Even when using the comma as decimal separator! It doesn’t recognize “dl” (customary in Switzerland), though, and come to think of it, it has none of the features demoed by Doug Engelbart in 1968.
