"The real threat posed by generative AI is not that it will eliminate work on a mass scale, rendering human labour obsolete. It is that, left unchecked, it will continue to transform work in ways that deepen precarity, intensify surveillance, and widen existing inequalities."
"The current trajectory of generative AI reflects the priorities of firms seeking to lower costs, discipline workers, and consolidate profits — not any drive to enhance human flourishing. If we allo…

The modern standard model of cosmology is a triumph of the scientific process.
On the other hand, it’s also kind of a kludge.
The modern standard model seems to glue together a bunch of disparate parts without any overarching theoretical structure.
Take inflation and dark energy.
In both cases, we have a form of pervasive energy that pushes space apart.
Inflation does it really fast and then dissipates.
Dark energy does it much slower and does not dissipate…

Just playing a bit of Dwarf Fortress in a biome where it rains poisonous mucus, so the surface is kind of tricky.
All my grazing animals died before I could reach a cavern layer (my incompetence).
Traders came but brought no food.
The only thing my dwarves have eaten for 2 years is turkey eggs.
Hopefully I can sort this out before they are all clad head to toe only in turkey leather.
Got some pigs but they take ages to grow to adulthood.
Spirits are amazing…

A screenshot from the game Dwarf Fortress showing the population count and their moods. There are 23 citizens, of which:
- 2 are ecstatic-
- 4 are happy
- 11 are pleased
- 4 are content
- 2 are displeased

In the last few weeks my online Digital Curation students have practiced running emulators to revive vintage software and learned the power and pitfalls of DNA storage. Digital preservation isn't just saving bits to a hard drive anymore DigitalCuration.UMaine.edu

If you find yourself in the Edniburg Scotland area do drop by and have a meal at Luca's Kitchen, run by Cosmo Molinaro who is a very fine fellow.
Located in #Dunfermline a short bike ride from #Edinburgh

The image features a decorative bicycle model, intricately crafted with a black beaded frame. The bicycle is positioned on a wooden surface, with its wheels, handlebars, and seat clearly visible. The frame is adorned with black beads, giving it a textured appearance, while the wheels are made of metal with spokes. The handlebars have wooden grips, and the seat is also made of wood, adding a touch of natural texture. The background is softly blurred, with warm, bokeh lights suggesting an indoor …

Not a fan of customers who drive me mad. I’m doing my part of the relationship and I really need them to do their part.
