Back to Now: My Case Against Time Travel
Time travel sounds thrilling—until you start thinking about paradoxes, pandemics, and unintended consequences. For this week’s WWBC, I explore why I’m actually glad it’s fictional, from alternate timelines to germ theory and everything that could go very, very wrong.

The Defense Department is looking for information from private contractors who can provide
“prefabricated, transportable, hardened shelter systems
designed to protect personnel from blast and fragmentation threats,”
according to a new federal contract notice posted Monday.
The March 23 notice has a deadline of Friday
and asks for companies to submit possible delivery timelines for 3 days, 15 days, and 30 days
and include information about the “highest thre…

Hi @… , I use the app on my iPad. Since maybe 12 hours it keeps crashing :( I use lists. I did not change any setting for the app or for any of the lists. If I visit one particular list, the app crashes, I can reproduce this, it’s only this one list. When I open Ivory again, all timelines and all (!) lists are back to a status before the last crash. That’s quite annoy…

I'm asking because there are some new server options, in upcoming Mastodon version, that an instance admin can disable federated and/or local timelines, which applies to all users of the instance. (Phanpy already support this, mastodo…

Content warning: TV, The Devils Hour S1 S2

Watched "The Devils Hour" because it's got Stephen Moffat producing and Peter Capaldi acting as a mad man apparently from the future or something.
Started quite slow and fairly normal but escalated and speed up to quite a frenetic pace across multiple timelines.
Spooky and suspenseful and confusing.
I like it.
Trouble is it stopped after two series and series three isn't ready yet so there's this interminable gap to wait now since I'm not a time traveller.
Nor is Capaldi in this show exactly really. Something stranger.
Looking forward to the next season but seems like the wait for time travel shows associated with now or once with Capaldi and Moffat is going to be long in general this year.

My algorithm (roughly, there are knobs to turn):
- Fetch the last 24h hours or 1000 posts (whatever is fewer posts), including boosts which are handled separately, though.
- Score them by engagement (I don't know better). There are bunch of ways to do that, e.g. geometric mean of boosts, favs, and replies weighted by account size.
- Take the top of that list and prune down further it its too many.
- Add 3 serendipity posts from accounts I don't follow.

The project had been abandoned for quite a while but it was running for me on github for years.
OK, let's get to the second reason you might want to unfollow me at that point. Vibe coding. I've recently gotten into claude code (for lean proving actually, but why not use it for python too?)
Of course claude can just modernize this very easily. So I've sat down in a few short sessions and modernized the code base and added some features and doc.

Toxic feed algorithms that serve Meta or X are bad, but that does not mean that we can't do something better ourselves here.
For many years I have been using a fork of mastodon_digest that scores posts by engagement and emails me a daily summary. It's open source and helps me to discover what has been going on in my timeline without following it all the time.
If you see me fav-ing your posts like 18h after the post. That's probably why!

From time to time I like to complain about reverse chron timeline that we all love here on Mastodon. One example: It localizes the timeline to people who post around the time you read.
Of course you can do lists (I do) and read everything from those lists and so on.
But in the end, reverse chron is also an algorithm. Algorithms per se are not bad. I love algorithms. :blobcatheart:
