When you are a C developer, every day is Xmas!

"The #userinterfaces of the late ’90s were the last ones designed by people who actually cared, by people who approached the whole process with the end user in mind, rooted in scientific data collected by simply looking at people use their ideas. They were optimised for the user as best they could, instead of being optimised for the company’s bottom line.
It’s been downhill ever sin…

Headed home today. Setting up the Mobile Passport Control app since Global Entry is currently not operating. The MPC app is remarkably good! Clear instructions, easy usability, it's very nice. It basically just collects your immigration info and customs declarations, replaces a paper form, but they did it nicely.
I recently posted I am exploring how I'd improve the LLM usability for CLI tools, here's a follow up of claude using a LLM format enabled CLI, how it's using it and how it helped

An underwhelming experience, my first setup of T2SDE. Technically absolutely something very special and blazingly fast and snappy. But at the moment too many usability gaps (installer, upgrading, documentation) to use it (even in beta) as a daily driver. At least for me. A pity.
Older paper but worth reading: "Our findings reveal that mechanisms embedded in modern E2EE messaging architectures – such as delivery receipts and multi-device support – can have significant implications on user privacy. Consequently, it is essential to balance functional requirements, usability and convenience with privacy and security, particularly in E2EE applications that are inherently privacy-sensitive per design."

…OK, that plus human training on basic usage opsec, but that’s mostly not a stuff app vendors can fix. Although usability defaults would help with some of it.
It appears that you can resolve most of GrapheneOS's severe performance limitations and tendency to aggressively kill background apps (after like 15 seconds!) by globally disabling "secure app spawning" and per-app disabling the "hardened memory allocator." At that point, however, you're pretty much left with a gimped AOSP that's missing a bunch of core usability functionality yeeted in the name of security, and you might as well install LineageOS. Or maybe Ca…
I get a steady stream in my replies of meant-to-be-helpful advice of the form “You should use [complex F/OSS tech] to [do complex thing] that [solves a problem you don’t have but renders the process unusable for the people doing it]”
…when the real tech problems we’re facing on the ground here, both with Signal and other tools, are 99% just ground-level UX stuff:
- basic, basic usability glitches
- workflow friction
- problematic default settings
- reliability
